EDIT: I should probably proofread my posts before I submit... Title should read:
W/O blue card.. Sorry for any confusion

I found a Gateway card for cheap and picked it up without realizing back in the day they came in pairs... My intent is just to clear up SD space on my n3DS and thought the Gateway would be perfect.. anyways, I now have some questions for those who still use it:

Is it any good without the blue card?
Is the blue one just a regular DS flashcard?
If not which ones might function similarly? (because I think this is the way)
and
There is no risk of bricking your 3DS anymore, right?
This will definitely not break my 3DS? (if it even works...)

blue card is just a regular ds card. you can do mset installation from any ds card.

but mset never supported new 3ds (it only worked for 4.x and 6.x firmwares), if you want to use your gateway card you're better off installing b9s some other way, just follow 3ds.hacks.guide and do what it says for your console and firmware version.

once b9s installed you can use it to load your gateway red card

I would not suggest using a gateway, like, ever.
Is this just paranoia from the bricking days, or are there real disadvantages of launching games through it? It would solve my sd space problem is the thing..

Okay okay, so if Im already cfw'd the red GW should just work with my n3ds? I guess I'm dumb, I didn't know all you did was install b9s with the blue card. Thanks man!

EDIT: Just re-read the part where you said it only worked on o3ds with specific fw... well that sucks.
EDI2: Unless I'm actually really dumb and you meant the only the exploit didn't work on n3ds.. I think that would make more sense. Gonna just try and see what happens

I never got the blue card with my Gateway card back in the day. At least, not that I can recall... It may have been added later on to facilitate an exploit.

I have a new 3DS XL on firmware 9.0.0-20E and the red Gateway card works fine (boots using MenuHax and the Gateway 3dsx homebrew app). It's a bit of a dick to use though with a number of hoops you need to jump through on this firmware. As for "freeing up space", I don't get it. If the Gateway card has a bigger microSD just use that in your 3DS instead...?

Or are you thinking in a combined fashion (3DS has 32gb and so does Gateway, this gives you 64gb)?
