Ubisoft has today officially revealed the next installment in the Assassin's Creed franchise: Assassin's Creed Shadows. This entry is set in late Sengoku-era Japan and follows the story of two protagonists. The cinematic premier trailer aired today provides a glimpse at the setting:

In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, you will live the intertwined stories of Naoe, an adept shinobi Assassin from Iga Province, and Yasuke, the powerful African samurai of historical legend. Against the backdrop of the turbulent late Sengoku period, this remarkable duo will discover their common destiny as they usher in a new era for Japan. From chaos to purpose, from darkness to light. A new Creed rises over Japan.

Assassin's Creed Shadows is slated to launch this November 15 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X.

Yeah, but they also would prefer to be able to come back and play their games later. The fact that games have turned into a rented service is the problem. The fact that The Crew happened is why people don’t want always online games.
People will just pirate it the first chance they get.

Apparently, the original plan was to kill Bayek and have his wife be the player character mantle.

Remember kids, a Japanese-American born and raised in Detroit knows more about events hundreds of years in the past than professional historians and Japanese academics.
OF COURSE the original plan was to kill off the more-historically-accurate male in favour of the "strong woman" female.
I'm infinitely glad that shit misandristic plan fell through, and Aya has minimal gameplay time; she's the worst part of that game, as I said before (lacking upgrades unlocked for Bayek, and being a crap character regardless).

Then again, the female won out in Odyssey, somehow becoming the "canon" choice despite being historically inaccurate.

Unless you have actual proof that Yasuke was a samurai, this is nothing but Ubisoft going for checkboxes to get DEI funds.
It feels very much so disrespectful that Ubisoft didn't use a Japanese man for a game set in Japan. 😕 Still, if Ubisoft wants to fix this mess, they still have time.

Moreover, even if he was granted to be a samurai, he should have been an additional character, not the main one.

Doesn't look good for Ubisoft. This, and the always online requirement.

>implying Ubisoft games are worth pirating
Well if they get people this worked up over being online why complain about them being online if we aren't even going to play them. Even back in 2014 Sony was doing this with titles like MAG which was an epic online only. Now we're getting options from smaller domains to connect to their servers to get access. Just saying there will be work around I don't get all the emotions over it.

It shouldn’t require the community to make workarounds, that’s the problem. Always online introduces problems that just shouldn’t exsit in the first place.

I wish I could waive a magic wand around like I'm a fairly odd parent but I can't grant that wish to make it go away. It's just not a huge issue to me and I'm not going to get into that scare of thinking every popular game dev is going to go the same route either.

LMAOOOO your that type of lad! p sure he was promoted historically.
Decendant of one of nobunaga's retainers says smth about the drama.
You really provided a tweet saying « look, this person saying they are a descendant is saying that »

I mean sure, Yasuke might have been a samurai. I'm still not too sure about that because I'm no historian and honestly, it's pretty hard to look for articles that aren't biased as hell towards any direction.
But providing a tweet isn't helping anyone in the discussion lol
And besides, we can still argue about why Ubisoft felt the need to make him a protag. If he truly is a samurai, why not really, but that's ignoring the whole debacle about DEI and Blackrock that we've had since many months now

They made the main character black, so people bitch about him instead of the always online bs, and 120 dollar version of the game. Also, if they made the character Asian, less people will talk about the game!

Still as a form of verification to be connected to the internet, kinda how Sony did for the disc drive on the PS5 Slim.

That sadly doesn't make matters any better.
Alright, as PC gamer, I'm no stranger to online and digital, but it is different story for game consoles.

Another game within ancient Japanese setting? Haven't we had enough in like last 5-10 years? Seriously overused, i guess it's just another of new world order agendas on the list, like every multimedia product has to feature someone from some type of minority to roll your eyes, sigh and say again, really?

I wonder from which game/product they're gonna "borrow" the already done world, environment, characters and just tweak them a bit. Ah, what a wonderful time to make easy money.
