Pimax introduces new 'Trial Payment, Final Payment' model for its VR headsets

pimax update.jpg

There's momentum in the VR/AR space and Pimax is betting on this to entice potential new customers. After revealing its line of new products last month during the Pimax Frontier event, the VR-focused company has introduced a new 'Trial Payment, Final Payment' model this week. This allows potential customers to make a partial payment for a desired Pimax VR headset, trial it for 15 days and decide whether to fully purchase the device or return it. Those who employ this new model will benefit from complimentary shipping as well as Zero-Cost Return Assurance. Should you decide to return the headset, a full refund will be issued, provided that the product is returned in perfect condition.

Pricing will vary based on the headset's model; but taking the $799 Crystal Light (Local Dimming Only Version) as an example, the trial payment amounts to $599 and the potential buyer has up to 15 days to decide whether they want to keep the headset and pay $200 in that case. Speaking of the Crystal Light, Pimax has also announced that orders for the VR headset are open and units are expected to start shipping by the end of May.

Pimax's new payment model will be first available in the U.S., Canada, European Union, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. More details can be found via the official announcement.

What's the point when the deposit is almost the same as the full price? Just buy it outright somewhere that has a return policy then, it's the same thing.

Make sure to double check any returns policy before doing this, not all places may allow you to actually use the item before returning.

That said, I agree this seems borderline pointless, if it was something like PayPal's no interest plans e.g. 'pay in 3', 12 months, etc. there might have been more merit to it.

Although it is getting them free marketing.

This seems very odd, but I do think it's cool that they're willing to try something like this. I wonder if they're going to be re-selling returned units as new, or will offer them discounted as "open box"? I would guess the former...

In college I kind of did a "trial buy" like this with Google Glass. I had to pay full price, but they had a 30 day refund policy and I was able to return it within that window for a full refund. This just seems like a slightly cheaper version of that lol

why isn't the trial price 200 and the final price 600?? this is so strange
Probably to minimise losses when people inevitably just don't pay the last $200 lol. Seems like a logistical nightmare.

For those wondering why the "trial" price is $600, it's a mind game. Once you're near the end of your 15 day trial, they're hoping you won't be focusing on the $600 you already paid, and instead see it as "for just $200 you can keep this cool device rather than going through the hassle of returning it."

No way I am spending 800 bucks on a VR headset, trial or no. I’d love to have a VR headset, but I’m not made of money.

I assume that a hold will be placed on a valid card, and will either go through if the user decides to not return the headset, or will drop off after receipt of the return. Some places require a hold for the full amount of an item in terms of expedited/express replacements.

This is just rent to own but worse
Unless you're paying more than MSRP, not really.

It's ridiculous that they're expecting that much up front, but if a person is at serious about buying it they'd have spent the full price anyway. I agree with other statements, though. Just purchase from a reputable retailer with a decent return policy.
