I can replace a broken volume slider, but doing trace repair on a broken off shoulder button that took the pads with it is way beyond me. The traces are so small that I can't make them out even with a magnifying glass.

It wasn't opening it that was the problem, it was putting it back together. If everything doesn't align perfectly (and you have to do it by feel, which is hard when you've never done it before) then stuff breaks.

Never had this much trouble taking apart anything else, I call that shoddy design from Nintendo. It's so heavily clipped together that it feels like you're breaking something when you open it (and the plastic is very thin and fragile, so you very well might), every part of it just feels super fragile and cheaply made.

The shell is extremely fragile of course. I broke the hinge off my New 3DS after accidentally dropping it.

@SylverReZ The New 3DS seems okay built. It's nowhere near as bad as the 2DS XL. But the paint tends to chip off for some reason. My cousin's 3DS had paint chipping off everywhere until there was hardly any paint left. Bought a replacement shell which he has been using for a few weeks and it's already cracked on the battery cover. Can't get quality replacements anymore

I was actually talking about the new 3DS XL in regards to the paint chipping. Sorry if that was unclear. I think it must be the metallic paint they are using on specific models that doesn't adhere very well. I've never seen this on any Nintendo console before and it surprised me when my cousin's 3DS got that bad that quickly.
