Microsoft hacked by Russian group, gaining access to source code repositories

Microsoft.png

Back in January 19th, Microsoft posted an entry in their blog about the company detecting a "nation-state attack" on January 12th that affected several of their systems. Back in January, Microsoft worked on mitigating, disrupting and investigating the attack, which according to Microsoft's investigations, led to the threat actor being Midnight Blizzard, a Russian state-sponsor actor that also goes by the name of NOBELIUM.

According to their initial blog post, the way in which the attackers gained access to Microsoft's systems was through a password spray attack, then gaining access to a portion of corporate Microsoft email accounts, but back then they assessed that the attack didn't show evidence of any stolen assets or data, but unfortunately for them, an update on the situation states the opposite.

In a new blog post just released minutes ago, Microsoft has stated that, with the elevated access they gain during the hack, the attackers accessed Microsoft's source code repositories and internal systems, with Microsoft claiming that one of the potential goals is to use the company's secrets, to which some of these have been shared with some of Microsoft's customers via email.

Additionally, Microsoft mentions that Midnight Blizzard's attacks seems to have increased during February, and that they will continue to work on mitigating and investigating the attacking activities.

This is really awful... But maybe in some twisted way it will lead to more Linux conversions/anti cheat support.

The only thing I have a Doze installation for these days are the games that don't play nicely with GNU/Linux.

maybe the US should’ve send a Howitzer missile into this hacker’s hideout from ukraine
A direct attack on Russian soil isn't advisable, nobody survives the next world war. To put it another way China is Russia's ally, Russia has the largest stockpile of weapons grade biological weapons which are several orders of magnitude more effective at making humans extinct than nuclear weapons and Father of all Bombs bunker buster to deliver biological weapon payloads into fallout shelters. That's not counting Chinese stealth bombers delivering it on loan.

I don't want Nippon subjected to cyber attacks. Nor any other US allies. Never mind me, I like Japan.

Microsoft keeps forcing users to embed their Microsoft accounts into their OS's and yet here we are. To become a local user in Win11 you need to trick the installer.

Tip of the iceberg, of course, since now this group is sitting on a pile of 0-Days.

I suggested that you all are very careful with Windows updates, it shouldn't be that hard to push a malware loaded update if they got access to Windows 10/11 source code.

im no fan of russia but modern day OS are slavery built systems that are more about data mining from the end user then protecting privacy and being an operating system for the end user.

cultures tend to militarize and control things that if they were free wouldnt be a cultural issue to figure over. if humans actually shared technology it wouldnt be used for war the way it is because every country tries to hold down the country next to them using technology so they can have the upper hand.

humans get what they have coming to them and even if it is bad i wont feel like we humans got something we shouldnt have and that some evil attacked us.

alot of people think in the world they want you to and i feel sorry for those who cant think above the government/oligarchial systems that have put chains on human cultural and the psychology of man

A small reminder that those "anti-cheat" - read Ring 0 spying piece of garbage - don't work on Linux not because it's worse OS or there is no "support". They don't work because Linux is not like a broken glass window through which wind is just blowing through. Linux doesn't allow such high access for something that should NEVER have said access. If user has less control over the system than some random piece of closed-source, proprietary, spying, garbage then something went horribly wrong and it's called Windows.

EDIT - Oh and if memory serves at least some games - or maybe all? - that have Windows and OSX release SOMEHOW don't have their "anti-cheat" implemented on the OSX, gee I wonder why?

...because of the premium required to play games at an acceptable framerate on Mac... Cheaters aren't interested in creating cheats on Mac as it serves no monetary benefit to them.

Then there are two reasons now. OSX for all it's worth - and it's not much heh - has structure similar to Linux, well technically Unix and it's not "whatever goes" like Windows. Sure it's made in horrible way, by horrible company but at least some "anti-cheat" wouldn't run for the same reason as in Linux case. Something like Steam VAC would run because it's done on the server side mostly and little is done on the client side but with client's - user's - permissions. Something like Vanguard will most likely not run as it is arguably worst to date piece of garbage which can control keyboard and mouse.

Russia needs desperately be disposed of.
Its a failed state by all accounts, only surviving because of the number of people there.
I haven't read more stupid comment in a very, very long time. Besides stupid 110% incorrect.

Too much TV for you mate, mainstream western media? 🤦

Take a break, stick to video games.
