<a name="start"></a><a name="before you begin"></a>Before you begin
Before you start thinking about running backups, you need to make sure to have the homebrew channel working first. If you didn't install the HBC yet, go to the <a href="http://gbatemp.net/f108-wii-hacking" target="_blank">Wii hacking section</a> and read the stickies on the top of the page.

Even after installing the HBC, you will not be able to run Backups just like that. Some additional steps will need to be followed first:

<a name="cios"></a><a name="before you begin"></a>Installing a cIOS
1) Installing a patched IOS236
Download the <a href="http://www.completesoftmodguide.tk/downloads/IOS236_Installer_v5.zip?attredirects=0&d=1" target="_blank">IOS236 Installer</a>. Place it on your SD card and put the SD card in your Wii.
Now run the IOS236 Installer with the Homebrew Channel and let it install. After step 1, make sure to DENY the piracy question. (If you do accept it, IOS236 will be uninstalled and the IOS236 Installer will refuse to work. To solve this, run a game from a disc.)

If you have no Internet connection (WiFi) on your Wii, you will need to download an IOS36 Wad file:
- Grab NUS Downloader from <a href="http://wiibrew.org/wiki/NUS_Downloader" target="_blank">here</a> (click download at the right side). Extract the package to somewhere where you can easily find it.
- Start it up and enable the pack->wad option at the bottom.
- Click Database, and navigate to IOS -> 0000000100000024 - IOS36 -> v3351
- Click Start NUS Download and let it finish.
- In the NUS Downloader directory, open the newly created 0000000100000024v3351 folder. Inside this folder should be a IOS36-64-v3351.wad file. Copy it to the Root of your SD card.

2) Installing the cIOS
Choose one of the cIOS installers listed below and run it the same way as the IOS236 Installer. If it asks what IOS to use for the install, choose IOS236.

Later versions of the cIOS installer (rev18+) have multiple choices in what Base IOS you want to use. Read their descriptions on the Download page and choose the IOS that you like best.

Again, if you have no internet, download the required IOS (See the download pages to know what IOS you need) and place it in the root of the SD Card.

After you installed your cIOS, you are ready to run any backup loader you want. You can run them with the HBC, like any other app.

<a name="disc"></a>About Disc Loading
PRO<ul><li>Best Compatibility.</li><li>No IOS reloading problems.</li></ul>CON<ul><li>A little lower than normal disc loading.</li><li>You have to burn discs, which can fail sometimes (= Bad burn)</li><li>Doesn't work on Wii's with new Drive.</li></ul>Disc loading was the first form of Backup loading on the Wii. Recent Wii's will not be able to laoad backups this way though, as Nintendo replaced the Drives with newer ones that will not read burned DVDs. These drives are known as D3-2 drives nowdays. There is no real way to see if a Wii has a D3-2 drive (unless it is a black Wii, which all have D3-2 drives).

To burn a game on a disc, you only need a few things:
- A DVD recoreder in your PC
- The Wii game in ISO format. (There are tools, like SuperDump or CleanRip that can dump a game to a USB drive/SD card on your Wii)
- <a href="http://www.imgburn.com/" target="_blank">ImgBurn</a>

<a name="usb"></a>About USB Loading
PRO<ul><li>Good Compatibility.</li><li>No Disc burning or swapping.</li><li>Faster than normal disc loading.</li></ul>CON<ul><li>IOS reloading problems.</li></ul>USB loading is a newer method of backup loading, but already very popular. Any Wii can load games from a USB device, even if they have the newer Drive. USB Loading also gives you USB2.0 speeds, which are usually faster than the original disc loading (loading times will be shorter due to this).

To enable USB loading, no additional steps need to be taken after the cIOS is installed.

<a name="filesystem"></a>Choosing a Filesystem

<acronym title='Wii Backup File System'>WBFS</acronym>
PRO<ul><li>Automatic shrinking of games</li><li>Ripping to WBFS is possible</li><li>Supported by all loaders and WBFS managers</li><li>No defragmentation needed (fragments are too big, >= 2<acronym title='MebiByte'>MiB</acronym>)</li><li>Recovery possible with <a href="http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=182236" target="_blank">WWT</a></li></ul>CON<ul><li>You can't use the space for other stuff</li><li>Impossible to resize WBFS partitions</li><li>Not recognized by any OS</li></ul>If you choose WBFS, you will need to ask yourself: Do I need the whole drive for games only?
If the answer is no, you will need to make multiple partitions on the drive, as WBFS does not allow you to put any other data on the drive once you formatted it.

Making partitions basically means dividing the drive/card in different pieces that can contain different data. Windows has a build-in partition maker: Right click Computer and choose manage. Then go to storage. To create new partitions, shrink old ones first (this shouldn’t delete any data, but you never know…). Be sure you give each partition its own drive letter and make them Primary partitions.

An example could be:
1TB drive
H: 5GB Fat, will contain Homebrew and stuff.
W: 300GB NTFS, will be formatted to WBFS
M: 695GB NTFS, will be used as Main partition (for all your Data)

If you made all partitions you need, you can format one partition to WBFS. To do this, plug the USB/SD in your computer and open up a WBFS manager. Usually, you just need to select the drive letter of the WBFS partition and click Format.

Now you can start adding games to the drive with the WBFS manager. You can also boot an USB loader and insert a disc to rip the games.

FAT32 (Recommended!)
! Hermes cIOS 222/223 or waninkoko's rev19+ must be installed to use NTFS !
PRO<ul><li>Can be used for other files</li><li>Ripping to FAT32 is possible</li><li>Widely supported by many OS</li><li>Supported by most loaders</li><li>Resizing and Recovery possible</li></ul>CON<ul><li>Games bigger than 4GB must be split up, but most games are <4GB so this won't be a big problem. (Backup Managers and USB loaders split the games automatically)</li></ul>If you choose FAT32, you won't have the problem that you can't put other files on the drive, since FAT32 is widely supported.

The only problem you'll find is the addition of games to the drive. It is possible to read .ISO files directly from the partition, but due the 4B limit of FAT32 it is often impossible to put the ISO (which are usually around 4.37GB) on the drive. Instead, the games must be converted to .wbfs files, which can be split up if they are bigger than 4GB. Because of the automatic scrubbing of .wbfs files, most games will stay under 4GB so it won't be that much of a problem.

Not all backup managers are able to split games, but the most recent ones will.

NTFS

PRO<ul><li>Can be used for other files</li><li>Supports bigger files, so ISO loading is possible</li></ul>CON<ul><li>Ripping (with USB loader) unstable on some loaders</li><li>Supported by fewer USB Loaders</li></ul>As with FAT32, the problem of not being able to use the drive for other things is not present on NTFS. On top of that, it also supports files that are bigger than 4GB, so ISO files can be put on it directly.

It is a little less stable and supported by lesser OSs than FAT32.

<a name="gamecube"></a>About Gamecube Backup Loading
It is also possible to run Gamecube backups on your Wii. Thanks to how the Wii works however (it disables all Hardware that the Gamecube didn't have when running a gamecube game, see Gamecube Mode), it is NOT possible to load them from USB (yet).

To enable Gamecube loading, you will need to install a new MIOS (which is responsible for the Gamecube game loading). You can install the cMIOS the same way as a cIOS: with the MIOS Installer (sometimes called MIOS Patcher). You can find the recommended on <a href="http://www.mediafire.com/?4ayvwgqey66qc9v" target="_blank">here</a>.

If you have no WiFi on your Wii, download the MIOSv10 with NUS Downloader (System -> MIOS -> v10, don't forget to enable pack to wad. The folder the wad is in is called 0000000100000101v10)

Gamecube games can be Loaded with NeoGamma after installing the cMIOS.

<a name="geckoos"></a>Gecko OS 1.9.3.1

Info: This is not really a backup launcher, but I’ll list it anyway. Gecko OS was originally intended to run games from any region. The build-in rebooter allows you to do this through the disc channel. If you install cIOSCORP, you can use this loader to run backups.

What is a backup launcher?

I heard Backup load slower than originals. Is this true?

although you should differentiate between disc backup loaders and usb loaders for the uber noobs.

Its under "extra for usb loaders"

Anyway, we still need guides for other systems
And is that partition manager really needed for windows? You can use the disc management to resize partitions too (not only to create them).

Also, once WBFSDriive is more stable, we can use that

yea it was just a quick set up.

i think it is, i couldnt get the disk management to partition my drive, the option would be greyed out.

Very good guide tj it's uber clean which I love. Anyone with backup problems must be required to read this b4 asking questions. I like that ur adding partition guide to cuz I have friends ask me about how do that all the time. Keep it up
