    These emulators already do scaling, so excluding certain scanlines from the scaling should be computationally cheaper since you're not manipulating the entire framebuffer

    In short: changing the emulation video mode to progressive scan also changes the output of the emulator's own UI in such a way that the UI is not shown – games still work. This also only comes into effect after loading a game; the UI is fine on startup, but not once you're in-game
