Well, there's a plugin called vita-usb-ether and it allows you to have Ethernet through USB on retail Vitas but you need to make a dongle with specific hardware for it to work. Don't really know about the speed compared to Wi-Fi though... Here's...
On your Vita, go into VitaShell.
Press START.
Second option from the top where it says USB device, make sure it's set to "sd2vita".
From the VitaShell menu, go down and select "Reboot".
At least that SHOULD work...

This setting is only for changing the device mounted to USB when you use the USB connection through VitaShell, it does not apply to the system itself.

You can just update your device to 3.74 normally, then you can follow the guide (as 3.74 is a hackable firmware, you can downgrade from 3.74 to 3.65 and have enso installed there easily). So yes, it is safe to restore your device.
cIPL installer gives you the choice if your model is compatible. DC will always use classic one when possible.
Classic cIPL can be upgraded to new cIPL but new cIPL can't be downgraded to classic one without first uninstalling it.
Correction: you can install New cIPL on every motherboard. 1g, 2g, 3g, 4g, 5g, 7g, 9g and 11g are all compatible with new cIPL.
