    I had the same problem with 2 identical 500Gb WD Passport Essential drives. I tried one on an onboard port and one on a PCI card port (that uses a different chipset) to no avail.

    I recently picked up a third Wii console at my local Cash Generator (UK cash trade in) shop. Only cost £60, 1/3 of the cost of a new one. It was on firmware 3.4 and BootMii could be installed to boot2, couldn't be happier!

    ^That's the summary. Can't upload the modified WAD anywhere as I'm sure it's against forum rules. Instead of using BlueDump (which I found to be quite buggy) you can obtain cIOS249[56]-v20.wad (in cios.rar) from the "Modify Any Wii" sticky in the Wii Hacking forum, and start at step 2 above...
