I made this version and I would like you to test it, and anyone who can contribute something to improve it would be greatly appreciated.
From what I saw, the subtitle languages are hidden in the Japanese iso, but some things I didn't know how to change

What exactly did you do for this?
Undubbed the game to Japanese audio? Or did you also modify the subtitles in any capacity?

Inside the Japanese iso there is already the structure of the files there (in all the languages it was published in) what I did was change the English subtitles to the Spanish one and the home button instead of the Japanese version, there in the main screen in the game ( no editing, really playing) it has a voice option, in which I put it in Japanese and subtitles in English (which ends up staying in the language I switched to) I would find it interesting to have a hack that changed it so that I could enable the other languages, but like no one else I did this, I'm sharing what I did here, there is another method, but I have problems with the videos, since I don't know how to change the audio, it turns out that the Japanese language is hidden inside the PAL iso (including the videos)

Oh I see.
I was wondering if you did anything regarding subtitle editing of sorts, but from what I can catch, you switched the English subtitles with Spanish ones, right?
You didn't do anything else for subtitles?

I ask because one of the remaining things to do for my Other M project is to resync subtitles from cutscenes I have reworked, but I haven't found a way to do so yet.

nothing more, there is a file called "dialogue" in which it has subtitles in all languages, which I copied and pasted into the HxD program

I think you mean the message_all.dat file, iirc that's the one with the subtitles.
Sadly that one doesn't seem to have any data regarding subtitle timings or frames, so it might be in another file.

Still though, thank for the information, and best of luck with the rest of your project :)

but there it is, it doesn't need time, just replace it, what would be interesting but out of my reach are small things like translating the Japanese menu and the audio and subtitle selection screen

update!
I made a new and "definitive" version, the ideal would be a hack that releases the languages, because the Japanese iso has all the languages included, my "hack" involves replacing the home button icon and the "file" Mesage" I replace English with Spanish

my replacement is in this file, just change the subtitles and that's it, the video's subtitles are included

I suppose it will be Spanish Latam of the NTSC game and not the Spanish version of PAL game
no, subtitle spanish in oculte DVD Japan (It's European Spanish, but it's hidden in the Japanese ISO)

Watching the video I see that it is not Spanish from Spain. I see the word "oprimiendo" in the game's tutorial which indicates that it is neutral Spanish. It also refers to the Wii remote as "remote". In Spanish from Spain that term is not used in the Wii games that I know of, it always refers to "mando de Wii". It doesn't matter anyway, it's great to see an undub of this game :)

it turns out that it is the same as the European iso Spanish and uses expressions that Mexicans don't use (I know this because I am fluent in Spanish, I consume a lot of content from Spain, Mexico, Peru and so on) and anyway, it is hidden within the iso

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
