Nintendo takes down Gmod content from Steam's Workshop

header.jpg

Nintendo might just as well be a law firm more than a videogame company at this point in time, since they have yet again issued their now almost trademarked usual DMCA strike, this time against mods in the Steam Workshop for on the most popular Half Life 2 mod, Garry's mod (or Gmod as it's usually referred to).

The news broke out yesterday, on April 24th, as Garry Newman announced that he would be taking down all Nintendo-related items gathered and made throughout almost 20 years since the inception of Garry's Mod back in the mid 2000s from the Workshop due to a DMCA by Nintendo.
This caused speculation online, as it has been known that often some people completely unrelated to Nintendo send false DMCA strikes for projects that might contain Nintendo assets of any kind (with some of those falsely made strikes sent by a person named Aaron Peters), and Newman was made known about it, with a research about the source of the sent-DMCA strike begun shortly after.

However, in a recently made post by Newman himself, he stated that "the takedowns have been verified by Nintendo as legit", so the removal of Nintendo's items from the Workshop will continue as announced in his post from April 24th.

This is yet another instance of a fan project being taken down by Nintendo, and it's unlikely this is gonna end anytime soon given their increasingly aggressive abuse of the DMCA for anything fan-related.

The actual CEO, share holder team and the investors?
Miyamoto hasn't been the CEO of Nintendo for decades, he shrugged that position off so he could continue producing and developing games.
Absolutely true, and Nintendo is certainly a lot more business & legal-savvy nowadays if their recent behavior is anything to go by, customer goodwill be darned.
But it's worth remembering that companies are made up of multiple people, tons in this case. Corporate decisions like this come from the top, and people like Miyamoto & Sakurai are a looooot closer to the top than say, a janitor or a Holiday temporary legally-not-an-employee (AKA: """"""contractor""""""). They've had hands in many of Nintendo's biggest money-makers in their entire history, after all. And are literal spokespeople for the company when it comes to promotional videos like Directs.

But it is also worth remembering former CEO Iwata's words on fanworks as well. DMCA takedowns absolutely still happened under his time, but... not quite like this.

Honestly, I was wondering why they weren't doing this earlier. Not that I support this decision but knowing them I thought they would take them down much earlier than this.

Will they have to use legally-distinct versions of the characters like what SML did?

sadly yes

It is Gmod with Zelda attached though.
It's hardly anything innovative when it was being done 2 decades ago.
still, they nameddropped Gmod and got Nintendo's attention. it also doesn't help that Nintendo patented gameplay mechanics that Gmod has always had shortly after

The only thing Shittendo will manage with this is have people move the mods related to their IPs elsewhere and get even more people pissed off. If it's actually them, I suppose.

If it turns out it's some cancer growth of a troll thatdoesn'tdeservetolive doing this, it would be some sweet irony if, if this guy's identity is found out, Canceltendo then sues them for doing crap in their name, defamation or what, heh.

Kinda seems like there still might be a chance it's false DMCAs...
Hardly. Most of the people claiming it's fake still are pointing at the MarkMonitor domain as "evidence", which actually makes it less likely to be false claims (but they don't understand that).
MarkMonitor is a third-party contracted by Nintendo to handle some specific cases of copyright protection and anti-piracy and MarkMonitor is the owner and registrar for the domain (mm-nintendo.com), so it's kind of hard to fake that.

It's got like a 0.00000000000000001% chance of being a false claim of some sort given all the actual evidence pointing to it being legit.

Whoa, hold up. ...Really?

So, let me get this straight - if you make anything related to Nintendo IPs, and I do mean ANYTHING, Nintendo's gonna sue you? Why do that? Is Nintendo so bull-headed that they're going to take away all references to anything Mario related? Will they next take their games and consoles because they're afraid of people playing them?!?

Hey, just ran across this. Maybe it's all an elaborate hoax?
