How to use banner.bnr

This site https://jerrytech.net/pages/guide-3ds-custom-banners says that the .bnr extension just has to be changed to .bin

Im using bannertool to make a custom banner and icon for Neo X, and have got it all working, but it outputs banner.bnr whereas HackingToolKit9DS creates banner.bin. Are the two files interchangeable, and if not, how do I make banner.bnr work? Is it the same for icon.icn too?
