I was responding to someone who mentioned gold-plated d-pad and buttons.
Haven't found anything; even on Shapeways. Surprised no one has decided to make custom n3DS/XL buttons yet.

I might have to learn how to re-shell my own Pikachu 3DS if some of the scratches increase in volume. Sometimes I think having red buttons to match Pikachu's cheeks would make sense instead of multicolored ones. The A button isn't really enough for me. lol
Yeah, I'm not sure. You could try local pawn shops, or the Facebook marketplace too.Look in aliexpress. There aren't many variations though :/
I had trouble with the ribbon cables, I ultimately just had to tape them rolled up hella tight, and then pull them through with tweezers .The rest wasn't too bad, but keeping track of all the screws was a bitch. Also you need to know that re-shelling this thing is pain in the rear. Be prepared because something brake 90% of the times...
where did you purchase the shell fromSo I bought a Pikachu Edition shell and some white buttons for my New 3DS XL, because I'm not shelling out the $400.00 eBay prices for one. And I like how the white buttons show the colored letters really well. The only real snag I ran into was the 3 zif cables going through the hinge, and I accidentally got the pin stuck once from putting it in upside-down. (Oops)
THE GOOD:
I finally got a custom New 3DS system the way I want it. The shell came from Europe (German), and was only $14 with free shipping.
THE BAD:
It took a month to get to me. The process took me 5 hours due to the snags, and me being overly-careful not to botch a $200 handheld. I will not ever attempt this again, the process was a nightmare and working with so many zif cables freaks me out.
AND THE UGLY:
I flung one of the bottom feet that covers the hidden screws out of my grey bottom piece across the room while prying it out, so that's lost forever... And I also can't get the screws off the other battery cover to secure the Pikachu one to the back. Power, stylus, volume slider, Start, Select, R, L, ZR and ZL are still dark grey because the button set was only ABXY, D-pad, and Home.
THE VERDICT:
While the end result came out nice, I cannot recommend doing this unless you have small hands, great lighting and good tools.
