Sony working on the original 'The Last of Us' remake, according to new Bloomberg report

tolu.jpg

A new report from Bloomberg broke the news that Sony is working on a remake of the PS3's The Last of Us for the PS5. Code-named T1X, the project was initiated by a small team of around 30 people wishing to form a new Sony games development studio. The team first planned to remake the first Uncharted game released back in 2007 but they settled on The Last of Us as it involved relatively less work and resources, and wanted to bundle it with the game's sequel for the PS5. Following this project, the group thought that it would have established itself and work on remaking the first Uncharted and other games later on.

T1X was apparently approved on "a probationary basis" and the team's existence kept a secret by Sony and weren't even allocated more budget to hire additional staff. Nevertheless, the small group worked on the remake and by Spring 2019, they had a completed a section of the game for showcase purposes. However, Hermen Hulst, former Guerrilla Games head and newly-appointed head of PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios, was allegedly unimpressed with the project.

When the team expected to begin production on the remake, they were called to do some polishing work on The Last of Us Part II which was delayed to 2020. This slowed down their progress on the remake as most of the team was assisting Naughty Dog. Following the completion of The Last of Us Part II, Sony apparently assigned "dozens" of people from Naughty Dog to work on T1X, some of whom worked on the original game itself. The remake was now moved under Naughty Dog’s budget.

All these developments made Mumbauer’s team see their short-lived autonomy as being stripped away. Bloomberg reports that by the end of 2020, "most of the T1X team’s top staff had left, including Mumbauer and the game’s director, David Hall". However, T1X remains in development at Naughty Dog.

Similarly, Bend Studio behind Days Gone, was "assigned to work on a new Uncharted game with supervision from Naughty Dog". But fearing that they might get integrated into Naughty Dog, Bend Studio's leadership "asked to be taken off the Uncharted project" and are working on their own new game. Jason Schreier, who wrote the Bloomberg report, says that he doesn't know if the new Uncharted project is still underway as "it was all on paper at Bend".

Bloomberg does not cite its sources in the report, writing that "Mumbauer declined to comment and others asked not to be named discussing private information", so we might want to take these news with a grain of salt. What the report seems to indicate is a refocus from Sony's part towards bigger games and big studios while distancing itself from smaller teams and projects, which was also indicated by the recent reorganization of their Japan Studio.

To be fair Sony isn't bad as Nintendo. Nintendo been doing it for over 30 years.
Yes, nintendo is another company who charges customers for what is essentially a rom loaded on an emulator. I just get more annoyed by Sony since they coined the term "remaster" in relation to video games, and their marketing convinced people a "remaster" isnt just a port. Usually a "remaster" is just the same game with a few config tweaks, might even just be using an emulator. Even if they change a few textures and patch a few things up, its not a "remaster"... if it was every pc version of multi-plat games would be a "remaster".

Yeah, I would say this isn't needed, it's on the ps3, ps4 and given away for free on the ps5 to anyone who has plus. The graphics are dated but hold up well enough, the stealth element of the game means the gameplay isn't that dated and is more than playable.

There is no need for this and the resources could be allocated elsewhere

I say this almost everyday (because I am annoying), but clearly this generation has no games, It is extremely bad on Sony side and worse on Microsoft side. Never saw this in my gamer life, even flopped consoles the 3DO had at least some game in it to grab attention.

Re-releasing a backwards compatible game is just the tip of the iceberg.

Thats a silly thing to say at this point in the gen. Sony has a bunch coming, but they havent dropped the ps4 yet. Microsoft has a bunch coming too, but they havent dropped xbox one and started their investment a bit late for year 1 games. Its not as if Sony and Microsoft havent had a bunch of games released on the new systems, and they do play and look better (often times a lot better) than the older systems play them. If you are looking a for a new game that is only on new systems, you probably wont see much of that until 2022 and that is completely fine. I think as time goes on and more people get the new systems they will understand my point.

What it boils down to, is that you are complaining they are still supporting older systems with vastly inferior versions of new games. I cant understand why they wouldnt for the first year or so. Mind you I wouldnt recommend getting many cross gen games on last gen consoles, most of them are quite compromised and probably should have been cancelled (cyberpunk 2077 is the best example).

Sounds like an absolute waste of time and resources to me if true, which I kind of doubt TBH. If anything, I more expect this "remake" is actually more of a "remaster-er" that would bring the game to PC instead, and then PS5 would just kind of be an "oh yeah I guess we could do that, too". Given that Sony's statement on bringing more PS exclusives to PC is, so far, holding true this would be much more likely IMO.

Watch them make some changes so that it now sucks :) The naughty dog that made the original TLOU doesnt exist anymore, their senior staff keep quitting.

Not gonna lie, this feels highly unnecessary.

You release the original on PS3, release a remaster on PS4, and now want to make a remake of it on PS5?

For all the shit GTA 5 gets with its re-releases, at least they're only remastering it each time. Imagine if the forthcoming GTA 5 on PS5 were now going to be a remake. That would essentially put it in the same situation, and I know none of you are here for a remake of that game, it's a great game, but the amount of time and effort to make such a remake would so clearly be better spent elsewhere. Exactly how I feel here too.

The Last of Us is a good game, but it was way overhyped. I enjoyed it though for the most part.

Uncharted on the other hand I've never been able to tolerate, on of the most boring, linear worthless games I've tried.

I liken it to Gears of War (an action platformer equivalent). I guess there are people who like them, but for the life of me I can't see why.

Remake is probably a way too strong word. I know a guy at Naughty Dog, and what he told me is what they usually do is that when a new Sony console comes out, they work in running their engine on the new platform. They did this with the Vita and PS4 that resulted in Golden Abyss and TLOU Remastered projects. This is probably the same thing with a TLOU Remastered remasted.

I would love for this game to be on PC because I am PC Master Race and I want the superior version.

Is it piracy if it was released for free? Not in my opinion, but I also think it's not piracy if buying it isn't owning it, and it's not piracy if you can't buy it from the original creators anymore.
