Hi, completely new here and created an account specifically to ask this question:

I have a new 3dsXL which has all the basic cfw installed. Sadly I believe the DS is broken, as it will crash and give me "errdisp" when trying to access the home menu. On the 3ds I have a digital copy of monster hunter 4U, and I'd like to back up my saves (300+ hrs of gameplay). I'm aware that because of the way encryption works, I can't just copy paste the files from my SD, and Checkpoint (the save manager), is inaccessible since I can't reach the home menu. The 3ds only seems to crash once the home menu is accessed though, I can load gm9 and play around with it as much as I like. I was wondering if there was a way to bypass the home menu completely and use checkpoint to back up my saves through gm9, or use gm9 itself to decrypt the save file. I can also post the details of the error message if it can be fixed, but from the research i've done it sounds like a permanent hardware problem.

Quick update, found a thread on this forum on the same issue. Their problem was solved by deleting a certain file using gm9 - the "Config savedata".
I'm not sure if doing this has fucked things up more since the problem was not solved
"errdisp" is no longer appearing, and 3ds will simply blackscreen on boot now. Safe mode still works but gives me an error when attempting to update now.

Bad move.
Deleting that file deletes your user profile.

Replace the microSD card's sdmc:/boot.firm with the older Luma3DS v9.1, insert the card into the n3DSXL, and try to boot to HOME Menu. Does a different error message appear?

Luckily I backed up right before making the changes. I rolled back and the new problem is gone, back to the old one now...

Will try your fix now!
-edit-
Error message has indeed changed: new process id, and a completely new “process name” line.
Here is a photo, i can type it out if needed.

I also found this thread with exactly the same problem. Files are outdated though so the fix didn't work.

-EDIT 2-

Got the file I needed from the discord! My 3ds now works again, after months of despair.

In this thread, the OP says that the error for a n3DSXL is caused by poor camera cable connection.

Hello, I have the same problem.
I also need a way to, or use checkpoint as a .firm file or by GM9, or any other way wich I don`t need to boot/open the home menu, to save my games.
(I have a FCRAM corrupted, I can`t fix).

That suggests you have a different problem and you shouldn't be posting about it in an unrelated thread that hasn't had replies in four years. :glare:

You can use threeSD to decrypt your save data on a PC as long as you have your encryption key. See https://gbatemp.net/threads/restore-save-data-from-dead-3ds-2ds.606907/ . (Be sure to read the first few posts in the thread.)
