"Dino Crisis 2" for PC gets the "Classic Rebirth" mod treatment by developer Gemini

The Classic Rebirth set of mods have been a main staple for many to relive and enjoy some of their favourite Capcom games on PC with the best possible quality compared to the other current options to play such games.

Developer and hacker Gemini has put years of his life to modify and improve upon the obscure PC releases handled by SourceNext of some of the most beloved Capcom games, like Resident Evil 2 as well as the rest of the original trilogy of Resident Evil titles (RE1 & RE3), Dino Crisis 1 and now his latest work has just been released today, with the latest title getting the Classic Rebirth treatment being Dino Crisis 2.

Almost all of his Classic Rebirth mods offer quality of life changes to the PC releases to be able to enjoy the games in newer hardware and software, like changing old file codecs to newer ones for better compatibility, implementing XInput & Direct3D 9 (or above), higher resolutions, vibration support, bugfixes from the original releases, and even support for mods, which go from translations, better quality videos/audio to even a unique story mods like in the case of some Resident Evil mods.

For Dino Crisis 2 specifically, the main changes that come with the Classic Rebirth mod from its original SourceNext release are:
  • Replaces DirectDraw 7 with Direct3D 9, for improved compatibility with modern GPUs (and prevents rundll32.exe/GameUX from executing for no good reason).
  • Replaces DirectInput 7.00 with new input methods such as XInput, RawInput, DirectInput 8.00, and native keyboard support.
  • Replaces DirectSound with XAudio2.
  • Replaces DirectShow video playback with a custom ffmpeg-based player that requires no codecs.
  • Replaces buggy full screen mode with borderless window and fixes the aspect ratio to be locked to 4:3.
  • Replaces broken context switching module to avoid crashes at boot or in other random spots.
  • Fixes frame rate issue to provide smooth 20/30/60 fps support.
  • Removes the need to install the game, making it portable to another PC just by coping the data.
  • Restores missing, broken, or butchered graphical effects.
  • Restores correct music loops, missing sound effects, and generally improves volume levels.
  • Reworks the option screen in order to be able to fully remap controls, and change BGM/SFX volume levels. These options can also be changed in the config dialog that appears before the game boots and are applied globally, so they don’t change when a saved game is loaded.

Gemini has other features planned for subsequent updates of the mod, like adding OGG file support to allow for better quality music into the game (which is already coded in, but not configured due no OST packs being available as of yet), and also vibration support through controllers.

Those interested in trying out the new Classic Rebirth mod for Dino Crisis 2 can do so by visiting the Classic Rebirth Website and downloading the pack for Dino Crisis 2, and some better quality mods if the player so desires.

This is great. I never finished Dino Crisis 2, but this might motivate me to give it another shot. It's great to see Gemini still working on new projects.

I remember Gemini was working on a Resident Evil 1.5 full restoration project ages ago, but I don't think it was ever completed.

Gemini and Aydan Watkins are like the MVPs of Resident Evil stuff.
Aydan has showed a lot of really promising mods, WIPs and PoC that are just mind blowing.

One of his most prominent ones which I'm waiting on eagerly is the Resident Evil Survivor Redux mod, which is using Resident Evil 2's engine to make a 3rd person version of Survivor, it looks fucking awesome:

Whoa, this is really impressive. It looks like the game is using 3D environments, which I suppose the original did to some degree for the collision. I never finished Resident Evil Survivor either, and an RE2-style version would definitely get me back into it.

It's nostalgic to see all these classic RE and DC games getting so much attention. I looked into Resident Evil 1.5 restoration projects, and as of last year, the "Magic Zombie Door" version is still being bugfixed. I still recall the days when fans were desperate for a 1.5 prototype/beta. It reached fever pitches in some communities, resulting in tons of drama. When the PlayStation Museum got a hold of a beta and released some footage, everyone had a moment. Crazy times.

EDIT: Team IGAS was the name of the group working on the RE1.5 restoration project! I had forgotten some of those key players, like MrBZork. "Bioflames," "The Horror Is Alive," I'm having multiple nostalgia trips in this one thread.

Tbh I never really liked RE1.5 all that much, from aesthetics to everything else, it felt too much like RE1 with better backgrounds.
I just wish that we could one day get a leak of RE3.5 instead, now that one seems really interesting. Or maybe even a leak of the RE0 N64 prototype.

Most of you don't know, but Gemini is active on an Italian ROM hacking site and has done some very nice translations for PSX games, mostly.

I'm also on RHDI's Discord server and you can contact him there for any info.

Nice, these projects are fun, I had to decompile MegaMan legends and change some stuff to make it playable nicely on windows 10 some time ago.
Nice.

The tank controls always ruined games for me as I found them to be.. not very enjoyable.

Looks great.

Woahhhhh… this is one of the only PC games I own. Never did beat it, got wrecked once I got to the part where you’re blasting brontasaurasuseses with a Gatling gun.

You know, I'm surprised RE3.5 didn't get "RE1.5" levels of interest. Especially since RE2 and RE4 are particularly popular among fans, and they both went through heavy retools just to get everything right. Maybe it was because consumers got two additional games from the remnants of those RE4 builds. (Devil May Cry and Haunting Ground)

I still remember that teaser video. The airship, the curtain movements, the violent ghosts/visions, it was definitely a unique game all its own.

No doubt.
Still to this day I wish we could have gotten any semblance or playable demo of what the original RE4 (3.5) build was.
It looked so unique and out of what was then known as RE that it peeked a lot of people's interest.

I seem to recall the original dino crisis being a gun con game on my ps1(?)
Does this support a guncon or similar controller?
That game is called DINO STALKER
and it's basically the Resident Evil Survivor of the DINO CRISIS series, which is Resident Evil with dinosaurs (up until Dino Crisis 3).
