I don't know how to update from 17.0
are you booted to the emmumc which runs soly from the sd card or are you in the sysnand which is the internal system in order to update you need to be in emmumc then access the homebrew menu by launching a game well holding the right bumper once you are in the homebrew look for the all in one updater launch it you will see different options the first you should choose is bootloaders update atmosphere first then update hekate then update to 18.0 if you scroll through all these options yo will find what im talking about i hope this helps by the way for ofw mode you can update the regular way through nintendo as long as you are not banned but i strongly reccomend updating the emmumc first i forgot to mention when you select update firmware once it downloads it will redirect you to day break once in daybreak make sure you select fat32/exfat theren proceed to install the update

I updated. I don't go online anyway for fear of getting banned. I set up EmuMMC before but I'm not sure if I'm on it or not. How can I tell? I also own a V2 switch. I like collecting switch games and what not so I will buy the games I like and what not.

if you go to settings scroll down to system where it shows your firmware version along with ams 1.7.0 look for an E at the end of the number if you see the letter E it means you are in emmumc if you see the letter s you are in sysnand with cfw and stock mode just shows 18.0 if thats your firmware also when you reboot if you launch from hekate you should see under the options cfw sysnand cfw emmumc and ofw sysnand the cfw sysnand is running the system with cfw behind it use this only for transfering saves and dumping legit games you want to put on the emmumc also never run tinfoil in cfw sysnand it will install to the system and get you banned it is fine to use in emmumc as everything being used is on the sd card for offline its best to use the emmumc the sysnand ofw launches stock mode on your switch

hey all,

i've done different file management projs on other consoles but have no idea where to start when it comes to switch homebrewing/hacking. i'm familiar w the basics of github, file installation, etc. but am overwhelmed w the amount of information from everything. my question is where do i start? is HATS a safe bet? is the 18.0.1 firmware posted in their tele all encompassing? (has atmosphere, etc.) if so what then? how do i launch the software itself/boot the file loader? lots of stupid questions like that which i don't know where to start w.

im running a patched v2 switch lite which would be a pain to put a chip in so wondering if it's worth going down the road of attempting CFW - are v1s that much better and worth investing into? no experience soldering

if you don't have the patience yourself to explain, would appreciate a redirect as i can't find much on google/yt - if this post gets taken down sorry im slow lmao

should note that im intending to use atmosphere for safe pkhex manipulation, so whatever works in that direction would be happy to hear :)

for your console the chip is the only way to hack it so you can use hekate to run atmosphere other wise you could try finding an unpatched v1 which is pretty hard now if you need a chip i can refere you to someone who did it for me

did some more research and it seems i might pick up a v1 unpatched - seems smart to have a vanilla device along w the hacked one just for extra security sake and to manage multiple accs for pokemon specifically. thanks for the reply and might go down the chip road if the unpatched route is a bust

question if you dont mind me asking - do you just take the mons from the genned file onto the vanilla one, or do you trade them over? curious about this myself

According to rentry.org guide, transferring any modified save file from emuNAND to OFW carries a ban risk, especially the one where cheats were used for online games. Do it at your own risk, but I'd strongly advise against doing that. It's not worth getting your console banned.

for ofw mode you can update the regular way through nintendo as long as you are not banned
As far as I'm aware or, updating firmware works even on banned consoles.

my question is where do i start?
I'd suggest that you go through these two guides: NH Switch guide and Rentry.org Switch guide. Getting familiar with the terms used will make using and updating your Switch a much easier task for you. Rentry.org Switch guide is pretty straightforward, but doesn't really go too much into details. NH Switch guide, however, is pretty detailed but doesn't mention installing sigpatches anywhere, which is required for game backups to work. If you want, you can even check the now-defunct Switch Homebrew guide website which also has a lots of useful info. That's where I started out.

For game backups to work, you'll need either the latest sigpatches or sys-patch module. Optionally for sys-patch, you can install Tesla + nx-ovlloader as that will allow you to see whether sys-patch is working properly. Having both sigpatches and sys-patch at the same time should cause no conflict at all, but it's recommended to stick to one that works for you in order to reduce the clutter on your SD card since they are doing the same thing.

is HATS a safe bet?
HATS has a way more than you probably need. Go through the guides I've posted above and they'll set you up with the minimal stuff you need to have to begin with. After that, you can expand on tools and homebrew apps you might find useful.

Indeed. They've probably listed everything that's included in their pack.

I'd say they are worth it, especially since you don't need to do any hardware modification in order to hack them.

Thanks for confirming. Maybe you've used 90DNS or similar in the past, therefore blocking Nintendo servers?

That's most likely because your console was CDN banned in the past. A CDN ban blocked any communication with Nintendo's servers from online play to even downloading firmware updates. The reason was a tool called CDNSP was used to download games, updates, and DLC from the eShop at the cost of the unique certificate of a Switch. Initially, Nintendo reacted by banning any certs caught abusing this. Eventually, Nintendo reworked their CDN to make this less easy to achieve which made CDNSP useless. And since certs weren't being abused anymore, Nintendo downgraded all CDN bans to more appropriate level bans such as console bans.
