Name the Switch successor: what should Nintendo call its new console?

switch2.jpg

Nintendo has officially announced that a successor to the beloved Switch console is on the horizon. As we eagerly anticipate what innovations this new device will bring, there's one fun piece of the puzzle left undecided: its name.

The name of a console is more than just a label; it's the first impression, a brand identity, and often, a crucial element in its success or failure. Think back to the Nintendo Wii, which despite its unusual name, revolutionized gaming with its motion controls and family-friendly appeal. On the flip side, we have the Wii U, whose name caused quite a bit of confusion and didn't resonate as well with the audience.

This is where you come in! Nintendo has always been about innovation and community, and what better way to honor that spirit than by inviting you, the fans, to help name the next generation console? Whether you think it should be something classic like the "Switch 2" or something more creative like "Super Switch Ultra Deluxe" we want to hear your most creative and catchy ideas. Don't hold back—post your naming ideas in the comments below. Feel free to upvote the names you love, and why not add your twist to someone else’s suggestion?

Anything but Switch Attach. If that stupid Youtube survey turns out to have been an actual leak, Nintendo already made a bad choice.

Anyway,
- Nintendo Snitch (now it not only bans, but also calls the police on you)
- Nintendo Swatch (in cooperation with some watch manufacturer)
- Nintendo Toggle
- Nvidia Shield 3

By the way, since the Nintendo Switch can be abbreviated as NS, just like national socialism (insert "Coincidence? I think not!" meme here), the afformentioned Switch Attach would be either NSA or Nintendo SA... which would both have quite a negative connotation. The Super Switch would make for a similarly alarming abbreviation.

As others have said, Switch 2. It's as simple as that.
Yes it's what they -should- call it, but alas Nintendo is not known for consistency with their naming. Calling it [console] 2 would be a first for them.

dear god, no one who mattered was confused by WiiU.
the systems release was undermined by sony and microsoft anouncing their new systems, 3rd party not wanting to invest into wiiu before market reaction to the other systems were out, leading to loads of cancelled games, nearly no games at release, leading into a downward spiral between there were no games so there were no buyers so barely anyone made games so no buyers.
like your granduncles gave a damn if they were sent to buy a wiiu or xbox threefiddy or microsoft kinect.

The Nintendo swap
It could be an alternate play on the name of switch "the Nintendo swap can be swapped between docked mode to handheld mode and with our VR accessory into VR mode swap your switch for a Nintendo swap today!"

If Nintendo only comes up with an upgraded Switch, this will be the end. The current market is overloaded with handheld devices. We dont need another one.
And if they do it, they better have an account transfer in mind, so you can play all buyed games from switch playable on the new one... But i guess its nintendo! You bought the games once? Does not matter, new console, buy it again. The biggest ripp off in history.
Oh and to stay on topic... Name for the device could be: Switch Bitch. "your bitch that takes your money"

Let's see if ChatGPT gets it right.
I asked it to generate 10 possible names.
  1. Nintendo Neo
  2. Switch Infinity
  3. Nintendo Nexus
  4. GameSphere
  5. Switch Beyond
  6. Nintendo Echo
  7. PlayMatrix
  8. SwitchStream
  9. Nintendo Pulse
  10. DreamSwitch
Somehow I doubt Nintendo will use any of those!
The only one I really see that COULD happen in these, is Nintendo Nexus

Nintendo already confirmed it's going to be something along the lines of a Switch 2, so backwards compatibility is pretty much guaranteed (think of it the way the 3DS handles it, where cartridges of the newer system don't fit into the slot of the older system, but vice-versa).

About the saturation of the market: Well, that's only the case if you assume that a Nintendo console would not have any Nintendo exclusives. Unless there's a Switch 2 emulator available day one, Nintendo has enough reasons to keep focusing on the handheld market that never really failed the company. Even the Steam Deck benefits from Yuzu and Citra being means to play Nintendo games on it.

Though, if you are not into Nintendo games, that's fine by me. But in that case I don't see which kind of Nintendo console would please you in the first place.
