So, I'm getting a 500GB external hard drive for my wii u along with a Y-splitter cable (will get here by saturday as of posting this) and I just had a simple question: Why is a Y-splitter needed for an external hard drive on wii u? I've heard that it has something to do with the system not supplying the HDD with enough power but is there more to it than that, this is being asked out of curiosity btw.

You need one for data, one for power. One port isn't strong enough to handle both task.
I see, thx for explaining

should also point out (for context) that I'm planning on storing wii u games with big files sizes (like Xenoblade Chronicles X for example) that I get from NUSspli on my homebrewed Wii U

Xenoblade X is really good open world game, hope you enjoy it.

The USB standart sais 500 mA max and Nintendo putted ICs in place to enforce this. There are hardware mods available (bridging over the ICs) so you won't need a Y cable but anyway: A typical HDD peaks above 500 mA. In case you're unlucky it might even peak above 1 A, so will have issues even with a Y cable...

File sizes don't have anything to do with this. It's more about head movement and other things eating power.
