New details about developer Tiny Roar's Zelda-inspired title XEL was revealed today. The developers provided a first look at the gameplay mechanic which involves exploration, puzzle-solving and time travel. The gameplay trailer aired today gives a peek at what to expect:

A wondrous 3D sci-fi fantasy, XEL follows an amnesiac protagonist named Reid, who finds herself shipwrecked on a mystifying planet with no memory of who she is or where she’s from. During her quest, Reid will meet a cast of charming characters, engage in thrilling top-down dungeon-clearing combat, and of course, find and upgrade a whole arsenal of valuable items and tools — some of which may help her jump through space and time itself. As Reid delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding the world of XEL, she discovers an endless cycle of peril. Does she have the strength and courage to end the cycle for good, or will she too become trapped?

Key features of XEL Include:
  • Old School Meets New School: Retro meets modern in a classic top-down 3D action-adventure featuring a well-crafted and fun combat system comprised of, dodging, parrying, and clever gadgets
  • Adventure Through Space and Time: Explore the mysterious world of XEL and uncover its dark past, utilizing mind-bending time travel to unlock the secrets of the mysterious land whilst mastering the many challenging dungeons waiting to be explored
  • A Timeless Audiovisual Experience: Composed by Gidon Wolff, XEL offers a timeless soundtrack complemented by vibrant visuals, handcrafted by a passionate indie team
XEL is set to launch on PC (Steam and GOG) and Nintendo Switch sometime this summer. The Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Playstation 4/5 versions are expected to launch later this year.

Could be something interesting. I want to be careful throwing around words like Alundra but that little trailer... it could go there.
OMG, you said Alundra! That's a game I haven't thought about in a long time!

I'm glad to see the resurgence of isometric/Zelda inspired games. The more the merrier.

Death's Door and Tunic are both great, hopefully this one is as well,

looks pretty cool. i am surprised more games dont do the zelda like open world expierence. after botw's success its been dissapointing to see devs not shift towards trying to replicate that type of gameplay with different story/chars

hopefully the gameplay is at a closer angle then the far out views shown in the trailer. i like a more upclose and personal angle to play with

I take it you missed out on the PS3 and 360. Loads of open world games there, to the point BOTW was derivative if you had played those.
It is also maybe not quite the company killer of trying to compete with World of Warcraft at its height by making a competing MMORPG but open world is still a pretty expensive hobby to do right, and easy to turn a nice linear game that would do well into a cat turd infused sandbox in a world of computer games.
