Thoughts.

Now that I have your attention—that was easy; I want to make an inquiry.

Why does it seem like that so many threads propping up, promoting “LGBT” affiliation seem to go like this:

1. Strong advocates of the subject agree with each other on the obscurely defined discrimination they face.
2. People who don’t associate challenge them.
3. Bickering and passive-aggressiveness overtakes the tone.
4. Thread gets locked.
5. The advocates of the thread celebrate.

Doesn’t it seem pointless? It’s like shameless plugging? Do advocates of a flag, label, a feeling of being oppressed want to be understood, or do they just want to assert that they are right?

If by starting a thread, such as “your opinions”, you already know that you aren’t interested in opinions; then what was the worth of it?

To me, it doesn’t seem to be really beneficial to anyone. In the end, it’s just advertising and further proof of disingenuous pretense.

If you associate with “LBGT”, that’s okay with me. It’s your choice if you desire to compartmentalize yourself. I’m probably a lot more “LBGT” than some of the people I like to argue with. I just don’t see the value of the banner, and associating with people who I know are disreputable just because our sexual hooks might overlap.

So you are a more compartmentalized "LGBT" than most?

I really don't know what to say.

The quotes and juxtaposition are meant to draw attention to the duality of the concept. On one hand, there's the banner/narrative/army, and on the other there is the sentiment of freedom in expression and identity which it intended to represent. I think you picked up on the irony of the expression; it was intentional.

Is this not just the natural cycle of the politics section? Doesn’t seem all too specific to the LGBT threads there.

I don't know. I guess it's more about things people are passionate about and how things operate on this site (though definitely not isolated to this site). It seems like I see a lot stronger dumping on people who belong to teams Red vs Blue than I see about LBGT nation vs scoffers/skeptics/cynics/disbelievers before a thread is closed, for the apparent protection of those who are advocating the discussion in the first place. It is true that people seem to like to see the threads they are vehemently apart of to be closed, and I find that to be an implication of intent.
