I've completed another game! Box Boy!, the start of a long running puzzle-platformer series! Let's look at the first game and how it made me feel!
BOX BOY! is a great game at displaying new concepts with a simple, preliminary art style. Over the first few worlds, you start to get two friends, a girl and a longer block. You have to go over 17 worlds and over 100 stages to explore. You can also beat the game to get new worlds! The cutscenes are great and it's very sad when not only the longer block character but you and the girl have to become blocks in the ground! You can only jump one block and have to collect crowns however you can use boxes to get around and do the puzzle. It does circuit like things, a cool fluffy hair character that kills you if he contacts with you. My favourite thing to do is snake. It's very hard to snake as not very levels take advantage of it but if you can it's very easy. Also snaking is just funny to say because snaking is drifting in MKDS. :)

So, my feelings about the game are... that the puzzles are great, the platforming is cool and the characters are basic but lovable!

Verdict

What I Liked ...
  • Good puzzle platformer.
  • Over 100 stages.
What I Didn't Like ...
  • Graphics are preliminary.
  • Hints can ruin the game and are only 1 Playcoin.
  • Black, white and grey.

Fun puzzle platformer! Everything is so fun and great. BOXBOY! is a great puzzle platformer gameplay-wise.

Presentation
Very boring boxy graphics but it's as close as you can go.
5
Lasting Appeal
Lots of worlds but hints can bring you to the dark side.

Overall

It's a great game but the graphics let it down however it's not bad because HAL Labratory made it up.
I love the BoxBoy series. I even like the simplistic art style; HAL knows how to make basic character designs cute and endearing, and I like how the basic art design reflects how straightforward the mechanics are. That’s not to say the puzzles are easy, but they’re all predicated on a few basic ideas that are twisted in every imaginable way to make a ton of brutal puzzles.

The co-op mode in the Switch version is awesome too. It reminds me of the co-op in Portal 2 in that having a second person there opens up so many more strategies and even kind of lets you feel like you’re cheating the game at times, as you piggyback off your partner to cheese out a win. I think the Switch also includes a campaign where you play as the longer rectangular block, which sounds really interesting, but I haven’t unlocked it yet. I might have to go back and do that.

(Also, fwiw, I’m pretty sure the Switch version isn’t a remake of the original. Just a continuation of the series.)

Thanks I got confused :P.

Easy mistake to make. BoxBoy is just about an annualized series at this point (I think 2018 is the only year since 2015 that didn’t have a new one) and they all have over a hundred new puzzles, so it’s kind of surprising that it’s all been new content so far. Wouldn’t blame HAL if they repackaged some of their old puzzles together to sell to a new market.

Good review, but I think the smaller list for the positives doesn't really reflect well on your opinions of the game. I know, I'm petty, but it just kind of stuck out. Anyways, keep up the good work.
