Playstation Vita, esp. the D pad. Nothing even comes close to that mastery.

In terms of modern controllers, I'd say the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. (sadly not listed) I've owned one since April 2020, and still no sign of drift. Also good for Tetris!
My personal favourites would be, and I know this isn't really a "controller." But the bottom half of the 3DS. And the Gamecube controller.
the pro controller is also one of my favorites, if it would just have analog shoulder buttons…it would be perfect

The one that YOU feel most comfortable using, is the answer. :)

Edit: And is "Compatible" with your system. :D

Thank you @ZeroT21 for pointing that out.

Whichever controller is best is not really relevant, because it depends on the system you have access to. For me on PC I'd say use a licensed xbox controller for compatibility reasons. Also a DualSense controller isn't a bad choice from experience

Currently it's the official Switch Pro controller. I really like how comfortable it is to use it.
I also love my Wii U Pro controller and its battery life, I often forget when was the last time I've charged it. Lacks any kind of "pro" features, but it works for what it is.
But, since neither of those are mentioned, I'll go with the PS5 DualSense. The build quality feels really premium to me and it performs pretty well from my limited personal experience.

I'm inclined to say Switch Pro Controller but it's not an option on the poll and there is also no "Other"
It's not a perfect controller, just the best one I've used. D-Pad could be better, and analog triggers would be nice. It is comfy though.
Xbox One/Xbox Series controllers may be better, but I have never used one, so I couldn't really pick that.

I really like the Steam Controller, though it's not the most comfortable layout. The right touchpad is great, but I would rather have a real D-pad in place of the left one. The battery life is amazing. The extra 2 buttons are nice. Overall it's the best controller for games designed for kb&mouse and still very good for games designed for analog control. But it's not usable with games designed for D-pad. So I switch between the Switch Pro and Steam Controller depending on the game.

I would love a Steam Controller with a similar layout to the Steam Deck. The analog stick and button placement is better, and it has an actual D-pad. That could be the ultimate one-size-fits-all controller for PC games and emulation alike. Sadly Valve dropped the Steam Controller and I doubt we will see another iteration, considering the first one did not sell that well.
But maybe there is hope, since the Steam Deck is popular many people are now familiar with this control scheme, so a second iteration of the Steam Controller could sell better.
It would also be a great companion to a Steam Deck + dock. All your saved controller profiles used in handheld would just work with a Steam Controller 2, so you could keep playing on the big screen with the same profiles you are already familiar with, and without any additional configuration (something no other controller could offer), which would make it a rather compelling option for those that use the Steam Deck docked.
This would bring it more in line with the Switch in terms of the ability to :switch:, despite not having detachable controllers. I expect this is definitely something Valve has considered.

I want a handheld gaming system with a tablet sized screen, like a 8 or10" screen, with controllers that can detach like the Switch.

I don't see the buzz about a square screen personally. I think there will be a review on the site within a few weeks though if you are interested.

I've put down the money on the Odin 2 Mini since I just love that Vita form factor. Loved the power of the Odin 2 but the size always put me off, this one seems exactly what I've been wanting.
