Japan-exclusive Genesis game "The Hybrid Front" is getting an English fan translation

The Fourth Generation of videogame consoles, comprising the Super Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive primarily, had a strong number of censored content in several games, and even entire games and franchises that didn't even saw the light of day outside Japan.

One such case was that of "The Hybrid Front", a turn-based strategy game released back in 1994 for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive, which involved a rather complex plot regarding the worldwide depletion of fossil oil, social instability, with several wars that rising from those conflicts, with a corporate power taking control over the planet. The game plays in a very similar fashion to that of Fire Emblen and Advance Wars, for those familiar with those titles.

The fan made translation for The Hybrid Front was originally being handled by Nebulous Translations, but the group went on hiatus starting in 2023. However, in a recent update by TheMajinZenki, an announcement was made that the translation was still on-going and continued by cybermind, and that players could expect the finalized translation to be released very soon, with a brand new video showcasing the translation in action:

While a certain date wasn't given for the final release, those interested in the translation can follow TheMajinZenki, cybermind and cybermind's YouTube channel for the eventual release date for it.

Waste of time to translate a complete shit game.

It's still a Japan exclusive game, and even if it is good or not, it deserves to be translated so that it becomes available to more people throughout the world.
Translations and uncensoring projects are a thing that should be of the utmost importance for romhackers.

Shouldn't we prioritize the good games first?

I forget where (probably the RHDN forums) but I remember one of the Nebulous folks talking about the depth of the story for this game, and how they got an actual sci-fi novelist to write it. Give it a shot, you might have fun.

On a side note anyone else find it interesting how the Genesis has so many strategy games? Shining Force, Herzog Zwei, Warsong, Dune, Lord Monarch and Bahamut War got translations...

As for what to prioritize over this... I don't know, there's not a lot coming to mind? Surging Aura? Dyna Brothers 2? The Puzzle & Action games? There's some RPGs and adventure games stuck on the Sega CD, but so far that system's been mostly untouched. I'm not sure what's left on the stock Genesis.

I understand where you're coming from and it's a legit point, but my opinion still stands. I'm sure others will really enjoy it.

Keen to get this translation on my Everdrive when it's released.

That's a highly subjective viewpoint... I'd argue that pretty much all the *good games* have already been translated, but some of these under-the-radar titles that were previously inaccessible to western audiences have, on occassion, turned out to be fantastic hidden gems.

Yep agree, all of the major titles that people would have liked to have translated, are already translated.
It's only more niche/obscure titles that remain left to be done, so it makes sense in this regard.

Is it piracy if it was released for free? Not in my opinion, but I also think it's not piracy if buying it isn't owning it, and it's not piracy if you can't buy it from the original creators anymore.
