@Robz8 and @shutterbug2000 have just put out an impressive new release of nds-bootstrap. Titled the D(i)rectors' Cut, it adds DSi Mode support to the homebrew project, letting you run both DSi-exclusive games and DSiWare titles seamlessly through your Nintendo 3DS. The update supports all five of the DSi exclusive games that released during the system's lifespan, and it works with many DSiWare games, though currently, some aren't compatible due to the fact that the save function for DSiWare games doesn't work yet. TWiLight Menu++ has also been updated to v20.0.0, (update: a further bugfix now brings it to 20.0.1!) adding the Directors' Cut, as well as some nice optimizations. Both updates are available on their respective GitHub pages, linked below, along with their official GBAtemp discussion threads.

What's new?

  • You asked, we listened, and now the wait is over, and the day has finally come!
After years of playing DS⁽ⁱ⁾-Enhanced games in DS mode, whether it be on a flashcard or the console's SD card, DS⁽ⁱ⁾ mode has finally been added (with some help from @shutterbug2000)!
    • With DS⁽ⁱ⁾ mode, you can play DS⁽ⁱ⁾-Enhanced games with features only usable on DS⁽ⁱ⁾ or 3DS consoles, such as faster speed, camera, and/or using WPA1/2 networks to connect to the internet.
    • As a result, you can play all 5 of the physical DS⁽ⁱ⁾-Exclusive games as ROMs, which are
      • System Flaw
      • Foto Showdown
      • Picture Perfect Hair Salon
      • and the rest (which are exclusive to Europe)
    • Also as a result, you can play some DS⁽ⁱ⁾Ware titles, such as
      • Earthworm Jim
      • Shantae: Risky's Revenge
      • The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords: Anniversary Edition
      • X-Scape
      • and more!
    • NOTE: Due to most of the memory being used by the game, the in-game menu is disabled, and attempting to open it will cause the game to close.
  • Game region can be set for DS⁽ⁱ⁾-Exclusive and DS⁽ⁱ⁾Ware titles.
    • NOTE: Not all games are multi-regional, so the feature won't work for some of them.

What's the advantage over the DSi games that were previously converted to .cia?

Those are DSiWare, and the advantage is that the 40 title limit and TWLNAND size limit are worked around.
It also brings cheat support, language/region settings, and multiple saves (not yet), afaik those can't easily be done as installed DSiWare

I haven't really checked up on all this for some time now, but does this mean I can now enable DS⁽ⁱ⁾ enhancements on DS⁽ⁱ⁾-Enhanced games when using something like a DSTWO flashcart?

Partially. The only flashcard you can use DS⁽ⁱ⁾ mode with, is the R4 Ultra. Otherwise, you can only use the console's SD card.

So basically just run the games off SD card with Twilight Menu and such to get DS⁽ⁱ⁾ mode to work. Does this only work on the 3DS or can this also work on the DSi/XL?

DS mode has worked for a while. DS⁽ⁱ⁾ mode was recently added, and required more functions to patch, as well as setting the correct MBK flags from the ROM header.

I slipped on the keyboard and you are right, I was refering to the DS⁽ⁱ⁾ mode. I will understand from the comment it is indeed working except that save functionality which I am sure you guys have in target and have the know how to clear, so congratulations on achieving this huge milestone on your project.

I would also like to thank you for all these years of effort and passion you guys put through like you do because this is what is pushing the whole scene forwards. Without you, without projects like this, without people with the curiosity to dwell, the passion to pull through and the guts to come public with your findings (where applicable) without expecting anything from anyone aside of the sense of accomplishment when you do something no one never dared to try before, without any of that no scene could be possible whatsoever.

You guys rock. Keep being just like you are.

@Xdqwerty there is health behaviour you can add to your character, then to use a health bar is lil more complicated, google n watch a few tutorial video on it, be too hard to explain here.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@BigOnYa, the character has the health behavior
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
I know you have to create a health and health max variable. Then there is a calculation you use in code to subtract width size of the health bar. Google few vids.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@BigOnYa, the "greenflatbar" is one of the preset health bars btw
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea you can use any bar/sprite. It will just change the width. Ok good luck and have fun. I'm off to go shoot some pool at the bar. Talk to you later.
    +1
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@BigOnYa, why does the health behavior exist if you can just use a variable?
