Project Hydra: My Upcoming Build

Saw someone do this kind of thing, so I'm going to put my upcoming build here.
  • Intel - Core i5-7600K 3.8GHz Quad-Core Processor [Coming in soon. $224.19]
  • be quiet! - Pure Rock Slim 35.1 CFM CPU Cooler [Came in on 8-9-17. Bought for $19.99]
  • Gigabyte - GA-Z270P-D3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard [Coming in soon. $102.99]
  • Team - Vulcan 16GB (1 x 16GB) DDR4-2400 Memory [Came in on 8-15-17. $124.99]
  • ADATA - Ultimate SU800 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive [Came in on 8-3-17. Bought for $55.99]
  • EVGA - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB SC Black Edition Video Card [Not Ordered Yet]
  • BitFenix - Nova ATX Mid Tower Case [Came in on 8-10-17. Bought for $29.99]
  • Rosewill - 550W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply [Came in on 8-15-17. $73.55]
  • be quiet! - Pure Wings 2 61.2 CFM 140mm Fan [Not Ordered Yet]
Total spent thus far (with shipping): $121.66
Current price on PCPartPicker: $1388.50

My reasoning:
  • The Core i5-7600K can be overclocked quite well. As such, I see no need in getting the i7.
  • I've heard good things about be quiet! products, so this hopefully will be great!
  • This board supports overclocking, so I chose it. Also gives an option if I go for 32GB or 64GB of RAM. (I might only go as high as 32.)
  • I wanted 16GB. This happened to be cheap, so I'll bite the bullet.
  • The 3D NAND tech happened to mean an affordable price, so sign me up. Only used for Windows and a few apps.
  • The 1080 Ti is for 4K gaming. Oh, and Wii U Emulation I guess? I also want it to 1-up one of my friend's builds.
  • This case seems to be excellent! Got it on sale, so lucky me!
  • Platinum Power Supply? Sure, kinda like efficient power.
  • This fan will replace the stock case fans if they suck ass. Heard that the case fans are good, so might not need to buy this.
The price is great. It is under $1400, so I think it packs quite a punch!

Failed to mention that I'll update this on what parts I have and the price I got them for.

Intel *rolls eyes*
(Well, Ryzen 1600X beats i5-7600k after overclock. Just sayin)

Can't wait? I know there is always something around the corner, but z270 is being replaced soon. Coffeelake (6 core parts on mainstream), isn't going to be compatible with it, despite being 1151 still, so new chipset and new boards soon.

Felek666, shut up. This build is great and your famboyish post isn't necessary.

Jealous of the 1080ti D:

Not really.
Normal 1080 is better than Ti in some benchmarls for unknown reasons

Not really what? And what benchmarks? Link?

Seems to beat the ti in LoL for some weird reason. Oo

In some games normal 1080 gets more fps that 1080Ti.
Maybe because he had a single fan? *thinks*

Depending on setup, could be cpu limited and beating the ti would be in margin of error.

Doesn't really matter though, said it's for 4k gaming, 1080ti is the only card that will get you 4k/60 in a lot of games.

Also, CEMU is not really GPU heavy. It depens more on Single-Core performance.

Some answers to comments in no particular order.
TotalInsanity4: I didn't get the be quiet! power supply because it's $150 for what I can get from Rosewill for $75.
Felek666: Would have gone Ryzen, but it doesn't play nice with Sierra. (I also wanted the option to run Mac on a VM or dual boot if I ever wanted to.)
BurningDesire: I'd go with Threadripper if it wasn't going to rip my wallet. I'd be stuck with $300+ motherboards, my cooler probably wouldn't work, etc.
Armadillo: Coffeelake sounds cool, but it also sounds like a similar situation with Threadripper, minus the cooler issue.
leon315: Named the build Project Hydra because it was supposed to be a Mid-End PC with a 1060 6GB, but mining ruined that and I didn't want to go low end with the 1050Ti. If the 1060 hadn't been hit so bad, the goal was to upgrade it 3 times (to represent one Hydra head being cut off and 3 more sprouting in its place.) So the name isn't related to Marvel.
Armadillo: I guess if it ever comes down to it, I could upgrade the CPU to an i7, but I don't see a reason at the moment.

@TheGrayShow1467 glad u understood it, even the show was boring as hell... i built a gaming pc march this year, i've got i7-6700k, msi gtx1070, 16gb corsair 3200mhz ram, 500SSD+500HDD and tower cpu cooler, and i spent about 1500€, pc components are sold 20% more expensive than states, tc.

and i just use it to play indie 8/16 bit games, what a waste....

I would say the system is fine but I would recommend another SSD than AData. It's a bit hit and miss with them and it would be sad if you loose the SSD to corruption or such.

@Felek666 "Intel *rolls eyes*

Not really. Ryzen, while a step in the right direction, comes nowhere near the performance of Intel CPU's in terms of Instructions Per Clock (IPC). This is important for things such as emulators, especially ones like Dolphin. Not sure about CEMU, as I've not used it and know little about how it works behind the scenes.

AMD has never really had an edge over Intel when it comes to IPC, and I don't expect that to change anytime soon. For this reason, any future builds I do will most definitely use an Intel CPU, until AMD manages to rival Intel in this regard. I recommend everyone even slightly interested in emulation do just the same.

While it hasn't be true recently, AMD has had the ipc crown in the past. The FX-51 was better than anything Intel had. The athlons outperformed the p3, think intel got it back with the p4. Can't remember, so much back and fourth back then. Point is, they've done it before, to the point intel paid oems not to use amd, rather than compete, don't see why it couldn't happen again, especially as Intel have basically just been sitting on thier ass since sandy and doing the minimal to get by.

I wouldn't be shocked if Zen+ caught up with Intel and made the difference negligible. A lot of Intels ipc advantage comes from clockspeed, it's a real shame ryzen can't get past 4 :(. Zen+ is suppose to be higher clock speeds + some other low hanging fruit for ipc gains.

@leon315

Join the club. i7 5820k, 16GB, 1070. Spend most my time on Rocket league and other indies that run on a potato :rofl2:

@Felek666 intel over amd is the obvious choice for some tempers. amd has some serious problems when it comes to emulation.

I have seen reviews and tests on the ADATA drive I have and they seem to show that they work good. Down the line, I might get a Mushkin 512GB SSD. Not quite sure yet. When the build is done, I do plan to get a 3TB HDD for most of my other stuff.

Updated OP with what I've ordered and received and the price I paid. Also added total price spent and current price.
