i love my kids, though sakura's been poking me in the stomach every chance she's gotten since friday (up to and including work today).

and other than a huge blister, playing the odaiko was great

It's the guys kids, show respect... remember Hadrian's toddler thread? They're dressed up for this occasion/festival I don't have a clue what is. She's just wearing facepaint..
Looks interesting though, the event. ^_^
Tried looking it up but all I found was that it's a fall festival.

They're not my kids. Just my students.

The one in the middle is in full Japanese outfit. Geishas wear face whitening powder. It's a traditional part of wearing a kimono.

Oh, I misunderstood cause the first part was about your kids.
And powder, not paint. I'll remember that.

I'm glad to hear you had a great time! Now that I think about it, I never went to festivals aside from New Year and New Year's Eve ones.

my kids as in my students. in japanese you don't really refer to elementary kids as students (生徒) though you can use 学生, but that's uncommon too. mostly you just call them 子供

Wow, you don't see this stuff in America, well, ever.

*is one of the many here that would like to at least visit* Someday...

Sorry :(

Takes me back (not that that's hard) to my trip to Japan this year... it was awsome :). I was in Kurashiki (among other places) where they had a festival (late August) right when we were there. Naturally I had to dance with them. There was another westener dancing next to me and he asked me where I was from, so I said I'm from Holland. He replied: "Ah dan kunnen we ook gewoon Nederlands praten ;)" (Ah, then we can just speak Dutch ;)).

Anyway, hope you had a nice time. Would love to go back to Japan soon, but I have the funds nor the time.

Yay for threads with pictures (and stories) from Japan!

P.s. where was your festival (if I may ask)? Looks like great weather!

It's not my first festival or even the first one I've been in (Aomori's Nebuta is open to anyone with the yukata) but I've lived in my town for a year now and (second year in Japan) and it's the first time I was involved with my neighborhood (I was mostly pulling the float with the kids but I also played the odaiko some as well). I forgot, but I also had some of my calligraphy out on display as well, so I was pretty well involved this year (between practicing for the real pieces of calligraphy and with drumming practice).

This is in Aomori ken. The weather was so so, but unfortunately rainy on the last day Sunday.

I've been feeling this way for about 4 months now, but nebuta and this festival really make me feel a part of the being here, rather than a visitor. And since my law school has a campus here, should I decide to, I'll be living in Japan permanently...

I'm beginning to think that I should stop telling people my "Japanese hometown" is Osaka and I'm certainly buying a new yukata (summer kimono) for Tanabata, Neputa, and Tachi-Neputa next year (I have my nebuta yukata).

Wow thats pretty up north, well at least it wasn't so hot then ;). Worth stopping by if I go and explore the northern side of Japan sometime (I did the southern/western part this year from Fukuoka to Tokyo)?

There's some decent stuff up here.

I used to live in Kansai, so I know western Japan pretty well (I could still probably make it on the loop and Keihan lines just fine). My next big trip in Japan is going to be "back home," as such.

ah. :)
I guess I should have known when you said she is like 6, instead of just saying she was six.

oh!
thanks for the pix ali, the one on the left is really lovely, the one on the right looks like a DS Guru to me and there is the middle one.

I love Japan.;_;
