Unexpected Upgrades

Imagine a scenario - you're watching something on YouTube as you're dozing off on the couch, the cat snuggles into you, the dog is fast asleep and your eyelids eventually turn into lead. You fall asleep, blissfully unaware that the TV is still on since safe shutdown mode is for wimps, and it's now displaying a static image. Now, imagine you wake up hours later to your screen having odd lines across it, and you've only just bought the thing. Clearly not something that should happen one month from the initial purchase. Messing around with the settings and even a factory reset didn't solve the problem, so the issue was clear - factory defect of the panel, thank god it popped up so quickly.

Oh-oh, spaghetti-o's...

I packed the bugger up and returned it to the store, and I have to say, the experience was pretty painless. I have to compliment all of the staff at the establishment, they happily replaced it on the spot, but since they didn't have that exact model, I suddenly gained an extra five inches of display - I was happy to cover the difference, which admittedly wasn't much. I am now staring at the most beautiful behemoth of a TV I've ever owned and I couldn't be happier. 4K HDR naysh!

Just up till this part, I thought you were writing an excerpt of a sci-fi or fantasy novel. I'm glad you've managed to sort out your problem with the faulty TV and get a better one, but at the same time I was quite excited to read something like this:

"...and then I was absorbed by the TV and entered another dimension. A total different world, when compared to the one I've come from... And there they were, these new people I will call inverted. They moved backwards and talked a different language that, as I later realised, was inverted English; like you were playing a song backwards in your Sony Walkman when reversing the cassette of your favourite band to play it again, and again, and again..."

And I'll let you finish the rest of the story. :D

The TV I had before the current one I was looking to get from Best Buy, but for whatever reason, the 50" and the 55" were the same price. I decided to go and try for the 55"...which was out of stock, which lead to me settling for the 50".

Now, though, I have a 55" TV that, while good in being a 120hz panel, a part of me is wishing I had 21:9 and other features as well. It has HDR, but the HDR looks washed out. Maybe it's because it isn't a premium model (it was a $1200 model reduced to $700-something that, after some discounts due to being a Walmart employee, I was able to bring the price down to around $600 for), or who knows what, but it does make me wonder if HDR really adds all that much when the games that I tried it out with (Injustice 2 and MK11) that support it look better with it off.

In my experience HDR is only truly noticeable when coupled with decent micro dimming - that's the only way to get "true black" out of your TV. The settings you plug into it also play a role here - mine also looked funky until I switched off most of the features like motion blur, smoothing etc. which are obviously designed for movies, not video games. Right now I'm running medium dimming with HDR and medium power saving preset, the last of which is only on to prevent the backlight from dying prematurely. It looks gorgeous, particularly after switching from a non-HDR 1080p set with no zone dimming - it's a whole different kettle of fish. I'm a little disappointed that the first one I picked up was unlucky, but at that size panel defects are not uncommon, so I'm crossing my fingers that this one's a winner - same range, since I really loved the way the display looked, just a tad bigger.

I bought a 55" Hisense 4K HDR last month.
Pretty awesome tv for the price, while HDR seemed pretty pointless to me, it sure makes a dif with compatible games.
I use the TV mostly with my PS4 Pro and games like Nioh 2 really stand out with HDR.

I liked when you bought a tv it did not need updates. It either worked or didn't. If it was defective then you went and exchanged it. You did not have to mess with updates. All features were there out of the box. To add features it was called buying a vcr/dvd player. Which worked on any set you bought.

As you can tell i hate all the updating shit. Despite any updates they become outdated faster then before.

especially Nintendo because they only ever lower the price of games when they do a greatest hits/platinum hits/players choice re-release

@The Real Jdbye, and the HD collections released for 7th gen consoles too
