With all the interesting new exploits I decided to get a few more PlayStation 1 models. Having no console with all connectors in the collection is kind of lame anyway.
So I ordered an SCPH-1002 that was described as working but in less than ideal condition. Everything has become so expensive in 2020 and I don't think is about to change any time soon (if it will change at all). Luckily the most games, consoles and accessories I want to have are already here. I acquired my collection for the most part dirt cheap on flea markets (which do not exist anymore). Now I wish I had bought much more. Double, triple and quadruple if possible. Things used to be soooo cheap on flea markets.
Like expected when ordering a console from a professional reseller, I got a working device without a modchip. Interestingly the previous owner seemed to use the swap trick for booting backups. That is a thing a reseller will most likely not look for. I don't think that spring blocking the "lid closed" sensor button should be in that place. Pushing the lid a small bit down makes the drive start.
Like expected from an early model, the laser/drive is pretty worn down (and I expect a comment on this from a certain well-known GBAtemp member). Starting Crash Bandicoot 2 (a little scratched) took a few tries. Then Tonyhax exploit told me what I wanted to know: BIOS version 2.2
To do some further testing I booted up Dune 2000 from CD-R because the game has pretty good full motion video. Stuttering. ARGH! The laser is really weak. Reminds me: Test legit disc if the videos work from there.
=============
The console came with a strange memory card. At first I thought it was one with more memory/pages. But there is no switch on this thing. When inserting the MC, it shows 10 on its small segment display for a short time. Anybody got an idea what this is?
Edit:
Thanks @Alexander1970 for giving me information about the "Mega Memory Card" in the comments.
Edit 2:
Dune 2000 cutscenes working from original CD. The drive does not sound too good. Some kind of quiet rattling. When standing the PlayStation vertically the strange sound goes away and the reading is better, even from CD-R. Mechanical problems?
Edit 3:
Seems I made a fool of myself for not recognizing that memory card right away. Having a combined Memory/Rumble Pak by Datel for N64 in the collection – with the same segment display and the same reflecting dark cover above it – I should have known. Getting older sucks. Getting forgetful in the mid-thirties sucks even more.
Thanks for reading!
