Act 1 – Open a Wii

Act 2 – Try the Wii
==============
I never fully reassemble things before testing. That saves time.
Connected drive. Connected Wii to CRT TV. Wii turns on.

Act 3 – Desperation

Tries again. Drive reconnected. All looking good. Same result.

"What did I do wrong?" I was asking myself again and again. Why didn't I check if the Wii was working before disassembly?

Act 4 – Solution
=============
Eventually I found the answer. After completely disassembling the console I noticed the Bluetooth module got disconnected. I wasn't even near that. Didn't touch it. If I had tried the Wii before removing the drive, it wouldn't have worked as well. It must have disconnected while packing and moving.
Dang it, Nintendo! Why does System Menu react to ALL errors alike: Black screen and no error message?! How about a nice text stating "Bluetooth Error. Your console needs to be repaired."

*Click* Bluetooth module inserted → Wii working again. A simple error message. Am I asking for too much?

And tomorrow I'll have to resort to ifixit in order to put the Wii together again.

Windows messages are cryptic at times, but they are there. And there is a crash dump after BSOD.

Wii is fully reassembled and working again. So many screws. So many different kinds of screws. Easy to screw up the assembly.
All in all the construction inside is pretty sturdy -- give them credits for that.

Still planning getting a modchip. Sadly the open source variants only support the oldest chipsets, which I don't have for whatever reason. Wiikey 2 is hard to install (solder to tiny chip legs). Maybe I'll try to get a solderless chip which only gets hooked between motherboard and drive.

The construction is pretty solid. There are also no problems like on the DS and 3DS family with the high number of flimsy cables and connectors. There is even a mildly thick steal plate protecting everything.
If you are used to Wii disassembly (and know which screw type goes where) it is certainly nothing hard. Only moment requiring full attention is removing the drive: There are the power and data cable which must not be ripped off.

But now that you say "the hard way"… there was a single triwing screw so tight that the soft metal startet breaking (stripping the screw). Nintendo really doesn't want us to open our(!) devices.

Trying to get my hands on one of the oldest Wii drive chipsets. If I find one, I'll definitely try to solder in an open source modchip.

Unfortunately there is no known way to convince the newest drives (like your Wii Mini for example) in reading standard DVDs. But… if you want to tinker around: There are tutorials for adding GC ports, SD reader, WiFi and even real HDMI to the Wii Mini. → :creep:

Yeah, the triwing screws was the thing i was reffering to when saying "hard way".
Personally, I haven't tried opening anything with triwing screws, so it's not an issue for me BUT many people just want to fix their consoles/controllers themselves but nahh either buy a new screwdriver or send it to nintendo if you're that lazy.
