Do video games cause violence?

Sorry for bringing up this issue again, but I have to write an essay for english and this is probably one of the best places to ask.

Personally, I do NOT think games cause violence. If someone does and blames it on Call of Duty or something, then that person has a mental issue to believe that the elements of a GAME can be applied to real life.

Pleas vote in the poll and give your reasons. Thanks, Tempers!

EDIT:

I was told of this very informative video. WARNING: The host swears A LOT.

EDIT #2:

My Intro to Mass Communications teacher gave me this link:

http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&pid=g...ALMBkhenlMlKthQ

It's a google docs PDF full of statistics on gamers. Some of which I found very interesting:

1. %40 of gamers are female - That's a LOT higher than I thought!

2. The average age of a gamer is 39 - Also a LOT higher!

3. The best-selling genre in 2008 was "Family Entertainment" (19.3%), while "Shooters" only got 10.9%

4. The type of online game played most often: PUZZLE, at 44% blink.gif (RPGs only have 21%, and that's COMBINED with action, sports, and strategy!)

All in all, VERY interesting...

This is a misunderstanding. She wants a persuasive essay with plenty of evidence. the GBAtemp forums would be perfect, considering most of these people are gamers :)

Erm, no. I believe what she meant by "evidence" were psychological studies and papers on the subject. Or at least a more objective poll with a broader sample. A gaming forum is the exact opposite of what she meant. Not that we couldn't provide some valid points or arguments, it's just that our biased personal opinions don't really carry much weight in this matter.

Who better to talk to than gamers themselves? It's like if you're ill, and somebody asks your friend how YOU are feeling... the friend MAY know a little, but it's better to go straight to the source.

That's one thing that drives me nuts about reports of "gamers" going ballistic. The interviewer or whoever talks to family, friends, even researchers on how the brain works, but how often to they interview OTHER GAMERS? Think about that for a bit... when was the last time a gamer was interviewed for a big story about a shooting or something?

Wow, the final draft of my essay isn't due for almost 4 weeks

why did she bring it up so early then?

well, 4 more weeks for other people to provide input I guess ;)

Here's something to consider:

Over 9000 hours in Paint. Feel free to use it in your essay ;)

You're kidding, right? I'm currently writing my final exam exactly about this. And I also have 4 Weeks left. What a coincidence :O! Only 3500 from 7000 Words missing here -.-'

Anyways, I've bought an expensive book, and the final result of it was that video games causes NO aggression or violence to "normal" children! Important here is that the transfer between the real/virtual World "works", so they can distinguish between them. Indeed children/teens that already are aggressive tend to those violent games, because they fit to their aggression, they can life their personality further in the game. Games can only ev. cause violence/aggression if they are always played and with too much intensity. But there isn't a proof for that.

Well, I could explain it better in German...kinda hard in English :P.

And: Children that betray others, lie, call them names, etc. tend more to MORPG games, than Ego-Shooters. Think about it!

LOL, that doesn't surprise me about the MMORPGs... there are a lot of whiners and such there, at least in all the games I've played

I know what you're talking about, though. That's pretty much what I've gathered from here at GBAtemp and the internet... both of which are free, by the way ;)

Oh, well, never played one. So you can guess what my personality is, huh :P?

I know, but:

-The book wasn't available in any library.
-They said Internet can be used, but not too much
-And it looks shitty if you have to write: "Source: Wikipedia" in your final exam, which counts 50% of everything :P.

So yeah, I knew this already from the Internet, but it's good you have a book which you can blame if something is wrong ;).

I'll also make an experiment where people can play such a game...will for shure be funny to watch with all the girls at shool :P. Maybe this is also an idea for you?

Hmm... Since I work as campus security, I have some friends in the RA staff... I could probably get something set up...

Thanks for the idea!
