Fucking piece of shit Calculus

I literally failed the exam we took today. I'm just not getting this shit at all. Well, I THINK I understand it, and then the test comes around and I just freeze up. I stare at the paper and nothing makes sense anymore. I barely passed with a 69.9% C last semester, and it's only going to continue getting more difficult. Plus, if I get a D, my university will call me into "grade questioning" or whatever and ask me why I got a D. It definitely wouldn't look good since it's the only AP class I've ever taken (only because I've gone to 3 different high schools and I always miss the prerequisites and tests to get in to AP)

My teacher is a useless piece of shit. Out of the daily 55 minutes that we spend in class, 40 of those are just him telling us story about his younger days and he shows off about all these famous people that he knows. I've pretty much taught myself the material since the beginning of the year, which is probably a good indication of why I'm doing so poorly.

And yeah, I have another test coming up next Thursday. I'm so sick of this fucking class ; - ;

Here, have some Japanese vis-kei metal:

Yes, I like them. Yes, I have both their albums. Fuck you.

That sucks you have a bad teacher. When I had calculus, I had a really great teacher, and it made the class go so much better. I'm sure the prospect of grade questioning doesn't help much with the pressure, sounds like a real ass environment to learn in.

Don't hate calc because of this bad experience! Seriously, I hate books and learning and everything and calculus was the one class I found practical meaning in.
Actually, you can hate it if you want. See how tolerant I am of other's opinions? :yay:

Hey! Calm down!

Most teachers are shit at what they teach. Get yourself a book like calculus for dummies. You would be amazed how much you can learn from reading a book. Either that or convince your parents to get you a tutor, 1-1 support is usually a lot easier as you can fire questions off straight away as they pop into your head.

I can most certainly relate to your troubles.
All throughout school, I've been fantastic at most everything the curriculum has to offer...

Except math.

It's always the same... I'd go through the chapter, doing just fine with homework and demonstrations and whatnot, but as soon as that test or quiz would roll around... I lose everything.

As a matter of fact, I found out that the quiz I took last week brought my average from a 95 A to a 77 C.

And yes, it always seems like the worst teachers are the Math teachers. Perhaps it's just because it's pretty hard to explain, but hey, that's still no fair. And I'll admit, not all of my struggles are caused by bad teachers, but it certainly doesn't remedy the situation any.

I'm in calc 2 right now and it just sucks balls. the teacher is descent but he always does examples and never really explains what he is doing. so you have to figure it out yourself which is lame.

I love math I love math I love math

So uh yeah, get multiple books teaching the same shit. I took math online this year partly because I didn't like any of the teachers that were teaching it this year.

Aren't quizzes weighted very low in comparison to tests and other assignments? I mean, I got a 67 on my Physics exam and I only went down from a 94 to an 86.

Sitting in my calc leture now. Lecturer is a shit public speaker. This is going to be such fun semester.

And what pisses me off the most is that I'm never even gonna use half of this shit in real life situations. Am I gonna need to know how to evaluate an indefinite integral in terms of dy/dx? No, so fuck you Calculus.

Calculus is a very useful mathematical subject. I'm an electrical engineer and I use calculus every day of my life. I'm also a math tutor.

You'd be surprised to figure out what calculus is used for in the real world. Don't give up. Try to seek help as soon as possible.

Also as long as your not dealing with series', I'd be glad to help you out by going over a few problems each week.

Not if they don't want you to rub their dick.
Then you just have a potential lawsuit on your hands.

Depends on your field, really.
Anyway, if your lecturer sucks, go youtube. Its really amazing how well the people on youtube explain stuff. Also if you're really serious about wanting to pass, just do a lot of exercises in whatever it is thats bothering you along with the correct working. Thats the only way to get better at calculus. Just remembering all the rules and knowing when to apply them.

Not to sound like a dick but further calculus was easier for me than actually learning the beginning of calculus. Other than a few tricky rules, all it needed was a good bit of logic.

OAC calculus just went straight over my head. Didn't help that my teacher was mentally unstable - she once took a meter stick/yardstick and slammed it directly into the desk to get attention from the class. (We found out later that she had died from cancer, so maybe that contributed to her nerves fraying.)

It depends on the learning style you have. I'm a visual learner, so all that abstract stuff just went foom - nothing stuck. (dy, dx - differentials?) It's been a long while.... Just practice and stuff, and a tutor is the best thing you can do.

Hurray for Electrical Engineers! thats my major!

Reminds me of some teacher I have. His names Mr. Robinson, Hes in Ontario high school, and he fricken sucks. I have his honors geometry class and he doesn't teach you squat most of the time. He like your teacher tells us stories haha but alot of the time there funny. But his tests are fricken hard 8 page tests. O.o

What I meant when I said that I'll never use most of this Calc stuff in real life is just that. I, personally, will most likely not have to use it. The majors I'm interested in don't require that high level math.

Thank you guys for the suggestions, though. I think I'm gonna get one of those "Calculus for Dummies" books (do those really exist?) or if not something similar.

By the way, I've always gotten As and Bs in all my Math classes. I actually liked Trig and Pre-Calc. It's just Calculus, for some reason. I know this isn't really a good excuse, but even my teacher has admitted that my school has probably one of the better ie. harder math programs in the country. It doesn't help that I've attended 3 different high schools, so I always learned different things... and this teacher basically assumes that all students in his class have gone to this school for the whole 4 years.

Khan academy on youtube, the guy is amazing. Please do use his videos.
