My rant about school-Apple Ipad's

I'm in year 8 and I go to a secondary college in Vic , Australia called "Westall" now our school got selected to be one of the schools that test out the Apple Ipad's for educational benefits, and everyone at the school was like "Wow, that's awesome" (our school is poor) and everyone was betting the Ipad's would be given to Year 12's or Year 11's but we then found out that the only year who get to test them is the year 7's and after 1 year of testing they get to keep them, and I reckon that's the worst thing a school could do, (I didn't mind the Ipad's going to year 11's/12's because it's understandable) I mean come on, the year 7's don't give a shit about anything, they wreck everything, make things sticky, steal things, etc. Better not forget that if the year 7's break them, they only have to pay $150 and they get another 1, seriously why would a school give Year 7's apple Ipad's and not any other year level!!! :angry2:

Damn! I highly wish that my university would actually test out new technologies, but I dunno, I think it's kind of weird that the younger students would be able to get that new technology.

Maybe the school system thinks that they are the "proper" demographic to test on? Frankly, I dunno...

maybe that class had the most hipsters/posers in it?

anyway your not missing anything though I would be a little po'd also if I missed a chance to get a expensive free item

iPads only seem to be cool because they're expensive. That's why everyone thinks it's cool, including me.

Well hey, last year all you ever did was make things sticky, break things and not give a crap, too. Pretty big improvement for only 12 months.

Do you have S.R.C's (Student Representative Committee) for your classes/homerooms...? You should address he/she and till him/her to present this issue to your year level coordinator and talk about the practicality issues etc. and you would like to suggest that older year levels such as yourselves, be recommended for new technology testing. In all fairness an iPad would be fun for the year 7's and hopefully educational. Perhaps the school or Apple decided that year 7's are good candidates for their product testing. And it's not like 'they're in year 7 everybody stop having fun' right...?

Actually it's more because it's an iProduct.

Meaning it is instantly good.
Or so people think, when in reality pretty much all iProducts are overpriced piles of crap that have ridiculously high brand fees.

Those are heavier so NETBOOKS actually are better in terms of portability

APPLE products are a status symbol. So if you have one, it makes an impression that you are wealthy and rich. Most celebs use Macs

iPads are lovely but oh so pointless (like the DSi XL).
They work really well but you could never do much outside of internet browsing on them easily. Its hard to get documents on and off the things and the lack of a true keyboard limits its usage. I think a load of Eee PCs would be more useful as a cheap, simple word processor style thing. My school's RE dept. bought some of those a year or two ago but I never saw them used. My Dad's school also got a hold of a few to try and test them out (I got to play with one at home for a bit) but I'm unsure whether they actually bought any. They were lovely little lappies, so simple to use for word processing and a bit of fun.

from what I've heard, they aren't that good but like you wrote, I'm a little po'd aswell.

A while ago, it got announced the whole school (every student) was going to get laptops but it never happened, the idea just died, but then again that idea was from our previous PM.Kevin Rudd who never really did much of what he promised (like most PM's) anyways laptops are better, Jamstruth (and other people) said the ipad is good but pointless, other than internet browsing it's bad.

Sorry for double post in a row, I don't know how to do multi quotes.

convince your school to get tablet computers runing ubuntu netbook remix
Ipad are basically a locked-down tablet pc, with lower specs than a tablet.

lol, how exactly am I meant to convince them to do that, I'm only in year 8 not year 12.

I'm sure if you bitch to student council and actually back it up they do something.

Except year 8's have like no power, that and I'm sure the whole matter is out of their hands.

Google isn't very helpful anymore, you get recommended loads of crap that doesn't solve the thing that you're looking for.
    +1
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@K3Nv2, afaik yeah but I also don't think that it runs on home grade routers like openwrt/dd-wrt does. OPNsense runs on full-on x86 PC hardware
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Sadly openwrt seems to be dying for support unless it's just. Anew name
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Like made by the same devs different architecture
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
idk, I mean it had a new release back in March https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/releases
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
Not sure how recent hardware it supports though
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
I mean for 1st party routers iirc linksys use to support it
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
ahhhh that I have no idea
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
    pretty cool though if so
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Or from what ive heard ways to set custom imgs for 1st party routers so locked down now days
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
OPNsense VM and specs and specs of system it's running on. https://imgur.com/a/S9wgGUD
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I've turned more features on in OPNsense lately and it's getting kind of high on RAM usage, I see. Probably bump that up to 4GB soon
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
I wanna make a 8core router with support for 20gbps doesn't even sound that silly lol
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I only have 1 gig internet but internally I have 10 gig connectivity for everything on my lan lol
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
fiber connection from my desktop PC back to my core network switch
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
2 port HPE SFP+ PCIE NIC in my desktop and all of my servers
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
    silly shit
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
eventually this desktop is going to act as a server too, just for the hell of it. Because this PC is WAY fucking overkill for how little I use it.
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
And once I do that, my desktop OS that I interact with is just going to be a virtual machine and use GPU passthrough to connect everything
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
    Send it to me ffs
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
No because it's my desktop lol
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
The most use this PC is getting right now is 979 Chrome tabs open right now
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
This is my desktop there are many like it but it is mine alone
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Enabled PPPoE on router now no wifi connection lul
