3DS Rant

I've seen a lot of people complain about the pricing of the 3DS. Now in Japan is stated to be launched at 25,000 Yen. YOU CANNOT DO A DIRECT CONVERSION OF THAT VALUE INTO YOUR CURRENCY. Economics just doesn't work that way.

GBATemp, however, put it pretty nicely. The 3DS will cost as much as the however much the Wii cost in your country. The MSRP for the Wii at launch was $249.99 in the US rght? Then that's most likely the price of the US. Not $300 or $300 minus tax or some shit like that.

Now $250 is a pretty big commitment for a handheld, not a full blow console. But let's take a step back. The 3DS has the follow features:

Dual screens, one of which is widescreen had as 3D capability with slide capacitor to adjust depth
Can play not only 3D games but 3D movies with no special glasses
Has graphics comparable to the GameCube
Has the ability to play 3DS, DSi, DS, GBA, GBC, & GB games via hardware backward compatibility and virtual console
Analog stick for intuitive gaming
Gyroscope/Accelerometer (one of the two I believe)
Able to connect to any 3DS for data without the need of internet
Multitasking between the game being played and other 3DS features such as browsing the web
IR sensor port
DSiWare software is transferable
Comes with free 2GB SD card
Comes with Charging cradle
Has 2 3D cameras which are able to take pictures and play them back in 3D

Now to me, that sounds pretty damn sweet for a handheld. Currently in the US you can buy an iPod Touch for $229 but you won't buy this awesome thing for $250?

I don't think its overpriced but why do you think its overpriced? Now however, the price for games for this thing better be reasonable.

no offense,but I'm pretty sure the GBA in 3DSware rumor has been proven fake, as they posted pics of a GB and GBC games in 3DS, no words on GBA.

As long as Super Card manages to update the firmware or make a new card to bypass protection I'm pretty sure you could have GBA emulation via the ds card slot.

@Rasas: with the 3DS's power, I'm pretty sure you can have GBA emulation without any extra hardware.

Nintendo should have included HSDPA as a connectivity option. A), more connectivity options is always a good thing, and b), mobile providers could offer the 3DS on 12 or 24 month contracts, like they do with mobile phones and netbooks. It couldn't hurt.

As for everything else... I agree with OP, you get a lot for your money, especially if it lasts as long as the DS has before they launch a successor, but that doesn't make it any easier :lol: The Wii was $400 at launch around here :ph34r:

Well, Ninty thinks they have great anti-piracy on the 3DS, so they are going to go into fleece mode with it. They can charge whatever the hell they want and people are going to buy it or be without, and they know it.

That only applies to software, not the console itself.

I hate the price because some of those features I don't give a fuck for. I have my GBA&DS still if I want to play GBC, GB, GBA, DS games I will just play them. Phones have come with IR for probably a decade and I have never used it. I might use the 3D camera as a gimmick on the first day of purchase, then I'll probably not touch it. Without all the gimmicks 3DS could be $200/£150 EASILY.
EDIT: If I'm honest I don't even care for 3D on the thing that much, sure it will be "amazing" for the first few days but then it'll wear off. Not only will you have a 3D screen that you don't think twice about but you won't want to look at another screen anymore because it's not 3D. :X
(plus I'm thinking of putting lead over the wifi thingy if you can't turn that shit off...)

Actually, only one of the 3DS cameras has full 3D capabilities, at least the last time I looked. You see, the inward-pointing camera on top of the 3D screen only has a single sensor/lens assembly, as opposed to the two on the outside camera.

Are you sure the inner one has full 3D capabilities?
AKA: this is overpriced, I can comare it to an Apple product, meaning it's overpriced, dot
You are just used to this overpricing, that's all

No, the DSi XL was/is overpriced. at $190, all it had was a camera, a slightly larger screen for pixely-goodness, a couple decent DSiWare games, and they took out the GBA slot. This is $60 more and it has full 3D minus the glasses capabilities, far superior graphics with a far superior battery life (probably) than PSP, Tilt/motion sensing, great 3rd party support, a plethora of great launch titles, movie support, improved multiplayer, analog, etc. A much more reasonable purchase if you ask me.
