Irritating Facebook Campaign

Hey guys!

I hope everyone is doing well? I sincerely hope I've blogged in the right place, but yeah. I'm going to blog about something really silly and weird so... I'm sorry :(

For those of you that have Facebook, perhaps you've seen the following campaign:

'Change your Facebook profile picture to a cartoon character from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same, for the NSPCC. Until Monday (December 6th), there should be no human faces on Facebook, but an invasion of memories. This is a campaign to stop violence against children'

Firstly, this campaign was not actually started by the NSPCC! Maybe I'm just a bit cynical but... I find it really insulting? It irritates me that this campaign probably wasn't designed to fight violence against children, but probably someone wanting to perform glorified chain mail. Secondly, people will change their profile picture to make it seem like they're giving support. However, if it came to donating money or volunteering for the charity itself, I doubt they'll be so quick to act. I would like to add that I do think it's good to raise awareness of such issues! Perhaps campaigns like this will inspire some people to actually take physical action. So maybe... it has some use. Essentially, I just feel aggravated that most people think they're doing something special when they're not!

Is that weird? Maybe I'm just thinking too much into it, because I know that's the nature of Facebook! It's just this is the only viral campaign that has actually made me feel disgusted. I'm sorry for having a mostly one sided opinion also :(

same, althogh i got into a debate which was intresting

I decided to change my profile pic to a cartoon, but it was just for fun and I'm sure nearly everyone else thought that too. Everyone in my chatbox is a cartoon, and I think it's cute. :) It's not really much for helping them directly but it's sort of like raising awareness. People might have even given a small donation or something just because of it.

Exactly. A debate with soulanger lol[he's a member here, too :P]
IF 10 million people do this and only 10 people actually go out and either volunteer to help with abused kids or donate money to a charity that helps those kids then wouldnt the campaign be a success. I can understand the people that say it is ineffective but the people that say they are irritated by it must just hate kids or are child abusers themselves.
Errm ok... I thought you might be trolling, but your first sentence is actually a fair point. I really do wish you stopped after the first sentence though lol. I'm certainly not annoyed at raising awareness! I'm irritated by people who think they are doing something charitable simply by changing their profile picture.

If people are inspired to do something like donate, I agree that's a good thing. However, other people shouldn't feel like they've made a charitable act... when they've done nothing. Do you see my point? :)
To be honest, I wouldn't have given any donations to the nspcc this weekend with or without this campaign, I would if the chance came up for example someone with a charity bucket but the opportunity hasn't presented itself..
I just changed my picture for fun, no harm done whatsoever.
I don't believe me changing my picture has in any significant way helped any children or anything special.

Try and see it from another point of view?

And even if this was just a 'glorified chain mail', where's the harm in going along with it?
Thanks for this post!

I definitely appreciate this point of view! Admittedly I seemed very one sided earlier lol, but I understand what you're saying. People can change their profile picture to a cartoon character if they want to! I just don't like the way in which many people would think they've done something charitable? I sort of summarised it better above lol.

Anyway, I hope you see my point!

What if those ten were inspired by the ten million that changed their pic? The ten million must have done something right then.

I knew this question was coming! Thanks for that lol ;)

Well... good for them I guess! However, if the 10 million people who changed their profile picture followed suit... can you imagine how awesome that would be? :D
However, in this case, they simply do nothing. It's great they inspired 10 people! Though if they made an actual donation themselves... you know that would be really cool.

Yeah but this campaign reminds people to donate also.
I usually wouldn't go out of my way to donate to charity to be honest, but this reminds me to so if the opportunity came up, I'm sure people would be more inclined to donate and possible even more generously :)
Anyways it's just harmless fun, even if some people do think this is 'doing their bit', they probably wouldn't donate anyway.

(Hope this makes sense it's 1:24am)

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is the reason why these slactivism campaigns are so irritating - aside from the fact that it's incredibly offensive to trivialise child abuse in this manner and frame is as such a minor issue that it can be stopped by changing your profile pic, and that the main object of the campaign is simply for the benefit of those taking part to fell good about themselves and to stroke the e-ego of the person who started it. It's the guilt tripping attached to it with the implication that if you express any sort of skepticism about its worth or motive that you're somehow an evil, mustache twirling Disney villain.

It's basically the Facebook equivilant of those old emails "FORWARD THIS ASCII ANGEL TO EVREYONE IN UR ADDRESS BOOK TO SUPPORT THE TROOPS AND IF YOU DON'T I GUESS YOU JUST HATE FREEDOM."

And the end result is exactly the same, nothing happens except most of your friends end up with a much lower assessment of your intellect.

Meh. My profile picture has been of a cartoon for months now. There was apparently a "Pokemon Week" back then so I decided to be funny and use Argumon as my profile picture. I haven't bothered changing it since then.

One of the offenders on my Facebook page just posted this -

WARNING** the whole changing your profile picture to a cartoon was actually created by a group of pedophiles because if children see pictures of cartoons they will add them. It was on the program internet frauds and will be on tv sometime tonight.. please warn and change your pictures ......back. pass on

Just goes to show these imbeciles will believe anything. I hope this rumour was deliberately started by someone who thought the whole thing was a load of bollocks.
