I would suggest a medium sized dog of some sort (unless you find a large breed you really want). I personally have a pitbull that we've raised from a young puppy who is absolutely adorable and awesome.
I have a husky. Siberian. Red and white colourings with grey marks that look like a Batman mask around his eyes, which are light green with a blue tint around the edges. He's called Nanaki and he's awesome. Always happy to see me, great with kids, etc.
Plus nothing says 'don't fuck with me' like having your own wolf.

Yeah, I know about Nanaki, he's what interested me in getting a dog.
Take note on your climate. Huskies don't exactly have thin fur, so don't bring one to the tropics unless you want a constant 2-foot layer of underfur (the fluffy white stuff) all over your house.
And don't worry too much about climate. Nanaki doesn't like heat much but we just walk in the shade wherever possible, or stop to get him a drink once in a while if it's truly an inferno outside. He doesn't leave fur everywhere except when he moults twice a year, which isn't a problem. I just take him to the local park and give him a damn good brush. Gets rid of loose hair without it being all over my floor.
