I was hunting the McRib for many a moon, when I spotted a sign that proclaimed the McRib was back! My first taste of the sandwich came when I was around 8 years old, and it tasted like heaven to me. The tangy sauce, the onions, and that soft soft soft soft bun. It was amazing. I've been trying to track down the McRib with no success for years - it's literally been 19 years since I've seen the sandwich. (It was out again with that really stupid Flintstones movie - if I remember it correctly.)
Fast forward to July 2011. I was out shopping at Dufferin Mall, and the EBgames was near the food court. I haven't had lunch yet, and it was a toss up between a cheap medium pizza or a McRib. I made my decision - I would conquer the McRib again!
The sandwich is surprisingly light for it's size. The sandwich comes in a paper clamshell with a inner sleeve of wax/parchment paper. It's about seven inches in length and not too big. Peeling off the top of the bread, I notice pickles (cut crosswise, not length-wise), raw white onions, and a ton of sauce on the pork patty. Slapping the bun back on, I take my first bite in nineteen years.
It's entirely too sweet. The sauce is one note, and almost overpowering. The onions aren't doing much to fix that problem - but slipping out of their confinement chambers. The bun itself is pretty good - tastes like the white bread of yesterday, but doesn't contribute anything but the texture! The patty itself has a very fine and even texture, but all in all, the mouthfeel is like biting into the foamcore of a pillow.
I would rate this sandwich: 2/10. It is something best left to memories...wasn't the sauce a bit smokey in the original version??? Hmmm...maybe Mickey D's to tweak this with a chipotle version and add more onions and more pickles to the experience. And also, Mickey D's - please for the love of Pete, don't bring back the Arch Deluxe. I don't want you to ruin that memory for me too.
Also: videogame awesomeness - the employee that served me had the Hylrueian eagle and triforce tattooed on her right wrist. Awesome!
