Feeling a little less useless

It took me literally years to force myself to make an account here; my first account online ever (no Facebook, no Twitter, no Google, no anything). I experienced a lot of bad things(1) and screwed up in my life in almost every way(2) and therefore I generally feel useless(3). In my opinion (1), (2) and (3) are a chain of causation, despite many people in my environment disagreed in the past. The memories came back in an intense way while reading Noctosphere’s blog post. I have the plan to write about this later. Maybe it will help.

Creating an account here was a good idea. I’ve seen much less trash here on GBAtemp than elsewhere. For the most the people here seem not to be like what is shown in the movie Idiocracy. When I click randomly into a thread in GBAtemp, the probability to find total nonsense seems a lot lower than what I found when clicking on Facebook links (if visible to non members) or the comments below articles on general news sites. So much stupidity everywhere. What I’ve seen on the internet and in my real life cannot be described.

It’s a relief to read something like: “My 3DS does… and… does not work.” or “My Wii will not read the SD-card…”

Yes, it only about gaming consoles. But even if it is not world literature or profoundly scientific, there are answers, counter questions and no matter if the problem actually gets solved, I see that some people on earth actually think about something and come to conclusions. If I look at some fools in the neighborhood and in my hometown, reading GBAtemp (and sometimes trying to be productive in the forum as far as I can) helps me not to despair completely of humanity.
I was waiting for the bus. A woman, complete stranger, never met her, came to the bus stop. She looked barely 2 seconds on the bus schedule and then shouted:
“They are all crazy! What does that mean?? I have to catch a train!”
Okay?! What now? Not knowing what to answer I tried it with: “Excuse me. What is your problem?”
She shouted again: “Look here: A and B.” (There is a bus every ten minutes with two slightly different routes). “They are crazy! Will a bus come soon? My train…”
“Yes. Every ten minutes as printed on the schedule.” I said and nothing more. Only thinking: “Facepalm!” Besides: The railway station is only about 300 meters from that bus stop and she had no luggage. Yes, I'm almost certain she knew the distance to the station, as she said something that someone from another city hardly can know.

A forum, an online community, is not a replacement for “Get a real life!” but at the moment it is all I have and the possibility to help others (or at least try) makes me feel a little less useless – even if it’s only about video game consoles. And I learn a lot; which is a good training because my brain is a little faulty.

I just wanted to say "Thanks for feeling a little less useless".

"despite many people in my environment disagreed in the past"
Don't worry too much about that. You're the one who sees the big picture. Maybe you failed to express a "detail" that is not a detail and explains why this chain of causation happened to you and not to others who still faced the first blocks in the chain, but still; the people who tell you "I don't think that happened like that" didn't live it when it happened.

I think that's one of my favorite things about GBATemp, too. People actually make an effort to learn the internals of how things work. If I were to approach anyone I know irl about any of the questions I routinely ask around here, people generally wouldn't be able to give me a coherent response.

I always feel like I'm part of this scene of people who do really cool stuff with their gear. I always have to look and see what other people are doing, so I can tune into their wavelength. I think I'm on the level now, but you know the Temp's got all these trailblazers who are making their own stuff too, and I think that we're just blessed to have them.

yeah, GBATemp is good at that. So are some areas of reddit. Focus in conversation maybe? either way, I also enjoy people thinking more about stuff and helping others with technical problems on the net while learning more about how to fix those things. That's what I see the internet should be used for, as a tool for improving what's physically there, I guess a sort of supplement.

you feel internet is full of idiocracy, and don't even use facebook ?
I feel everyone sharing meme and pictures and stupid animated gif and random poems or propaganda and fake news and spying on everyone else are all the worse of facebook (or other social websites).
The only website I read regularly is gbatemp, I also don't have any social media account. I wouldn't have the time to do that anyway.

on gbatemp, stay away from End of Forum (eof), it's the last section of the forum where all the shame is kept hidden. For information, you can filter the sections you can see on "recent messages list" from the forum's preferences. I completely disabled eof listing. You'll feel better without having to deal with these threads and gbatemp will feel even a better place for you.

ahah, I like the "this time" comment, implying it's always useless. I knew it!

I wanted to tell that I also feel at my place here, with other people sharing the same things I like, I also feel like we are on the same wavelength, unlike with people around me all looking at me from above and criticizing if we don't fit their vision of the world. If you are different, you are the wrong one, never them.

Thank you all for the comments!

@dAVID_ and @DinohScene: GBAtemp has proven to be more effective than the drugs my psychiatrist prescribes.

@Enkuler: The people who impeach the credibility of my statements about the chain of causation are saying this kind of things: “It’s all your own fault! You’re just making this up and hiding behind illness. Lazy idiot.” It used to hurt, but nowadays I quietly think: “You’re a loudmouth.”

@seren3: Not everybody is interested in modding game consoles; it is a very special topic. The problem is: I see so many people, who can’t give coherent answer to anything or read a simple thing – no matter what topic. See my example above with the lady at the bus stop. I swear, I’m not making this examples up (more examples next time). I could not think of such nonsense.

@Cyan: What?! I joined end of March 2018 and have been reading here for some years. I’ve not even noticed this “eof” until you mentioned it and just looked at the thread titles on page 1 and 2. Thanks for the warning. Ouch! I will pretend I never saw this. It partially disproves my blog post.
