Why I think the world is getting exponentially stupider.

#1 - The people in charge

Let's face it folks, the worlds getting stupider at an alarming rate. GBAtemp is starting to become a good cross section. Who and what do I blame? Lot's of things! Today I'll rant on about "the people in charge" of important parts of society. From presidents and prime ministers all the way down to bosses.

I know there have always been stupid people, it's a fact of life. It's different now though. Nobody seems to have any common sense any more, people are actually being praised for being dumb. I think it mostly started about 20 years ago. Back then the average Joe Bloggs was alot smarter then he is today. Bosses, while being a total pain in the arse did actually know what they were doing roughly. They still needed underlings to help them out but they could do the job and do it pretty well.

Then people started getting really worried about their positions. Layoffs, sackings and high unemployment were abound in the UK in the late 80's so the people in charage with their nice salaries and reasonably comfy jobs started to get worried that their heads would be on the chopping block next. THAT'S when the world starting getting stupider.

The people in charge needed to solidify their positions, so anyone who was smart enough to threaten their comfy zone had to be gotten rid of and be replaced by people half as smart as the one in charge. This made them look great, and helped to make sure that nobody could oust them.

In turn when they were promoted they would then worry about what happens if the person who get's promoted is smarter or more talented, so once again they would make sure that the dimmest of sparks got promoted into their old position. The new person with the position of power then realized "Damn if I'm not dumb, what'll I do if people find out?"

The simple solution, get rid of the one's smarter than them. They're in the perfect position to know who's more talented, smarter and what have you because they've just been promoted from that very pool. Once that's done they feel safe. It doesn't matter that nobody has a clue what they're doing, it's all good as long as they feel safe.

Then as people leave, move on or whatever the one's in fear for their position because, well, they're just plain dumb can then start to populate their place with non-threatening slightly stupid people. As time progresses they get their promotion and again pick the dimmest spark of the bunch. Job safe but the worlds a little dumber. This carries on exponentially over the years leading us up to, well, now.

Think of those old Russian style dolls that fit into each other, except based upon stupidity instead of size. That's one of the reasons I think the world is growning dumber at an alarming rate.

If you're intelligent enough to realize this, then you shouldn't be working under someone in the first place.

I'm not, I'm a self-employed cartoonist/greeting card designer. Although admittedly it's a little slow at the mo so I've gotta take a part-time job elsewhere for 10-16 weeks starting next week.

its been that way for years mate. with each successive generation we seem to digress in a way. let me give you an example. you read my blog post about noobs. its the same way, with each successive generation, the scene has faded in a way. if some noob pirates ask the questions that they ask now way back then? they would be permabanned.

i dont mean to hijack but it seems to me that this stupidity is inevitable

The way I see it, there is no way to curb this horrifying trend.

The only solution is to try and isolate yourself from these idiots, be it on a private forum, or in your own house.

EDIT: A plus side though, the stupider people are, the easier it is for people like me to exploit them and make an easy living.

Of course it is! Student nowadays only see school as a place to socialize and not a place to learn! Teenagers see dumbass actors and actresses who make money off of poor saps like them as gods! And don't get me started on MySpace and other similar sites... :glare:

Exactly my thoughts!

I completely agree with you...

I swear some places like grocery stores will only hire retarded people, because none of them know shite about their place of employment. When you ask them where product is, they tell you to go look on one aisle and if it's not there, then they don't carry the product... DUMB SHITS!!!

I've found products on other aisles after 30 minutes of looking down every possible aisle, sometimes the product is on an aisle that is inconceivably the worst place to put it.

That's just the tip of the iceberg, most people in this world are stupid no matter what their position in life is, but not everyone is retarded, be thankful that you're not completely surrounded by dumb shits.

Well, there is a grocery store here in my state, and after interviewing you, they make you take a psychology test and if you are too smart they won't hire you... I really don't understand why that would pose an issue. If you hire smart people, the store might be more organized and things might actually get done around there.

I DONT THINK THE TREND WILL REVERSE. EACH GENERATION HAS GOTTEN PROGRESSIVELY WORSE.
JUST LOOK AT THE DIVORCE RATE AND THE MORALS OF MOST PPL COMPARED TO 1 OR 2 GENERATIONS AGO

sorry for caps but too lazy to retype

Morals of people don't have anything to do with being stupid, it has everything to do with if they actually care. Some people like carnage. Some of the best serial killers in this world are geniuses and have been claimed as one by a psychologist.

When smart people in retail collide with incredibly stupid people, hilarious things (that aren't good for business) happen

As far as I am concerned schools stopped being a place to learn after about grade 6. While I grant you that math and language skills are important, I feel schools (at least here in Canada) inadequately prepare student for the real world beyond their doors. While history is somewhat important and shouldn't be allowed to die completely, I think there should be a greater emphasis on real life skills, finances, investing, budgets, dealing with credit. I'm not saying schools don't touch on these topics at all, but they just dont do enough. At least, mine didn't.

Exactly... Never cut out history forever, or else people will be oblivious to the facts of what happened in the past and might repeat history in a way that is unfathomable to us. This world is going to hell in a hand basket.

its been that way for years. and once students stop receiving training for proper skills that affects other things too and makes them a detriment to society

As for history, there are arguments that history is doomed to repeat itself regardless of whether we study it or not. Personally, I believe history is not even remotely close to being the most useful course out there. As soon as I had the option to drop it, I did.

Although I am not a huge history fan either, I think it is important for us, as a people, to remember where we have come from and what struggles we have overcome.

History is doomed to repeat itself, but can you imagine how bad it would be if people knew absolutely nothing about the past? It would be like being in the stone age again.

These days though the dumb are beginning to fill the streets AND the internet like a bad deleted scene from Dawn of the Dead.

The last time I was in a school was the mid-80's. Has it really gotten that bad?
Thankfully at one point, people will be too stupid to realize that hiring stupid people makes you look smarter, and that's when things will reverse.
I don't think it will though. These days we tend to massage the egoes of the incompetent. People don't generally say "Don't be so stupid" these days, at least no in the UK anyway. I noticed it alot when I ran the trolley collection in a shopping mall. There were more people that couldn't figure out the coin release system without actually being shown how to do it then could, and them figuring out how to put the trolley back to get their coin seemed to e a task they thought was for civil engineers.

I'd say to them "That's just stupid, it's not exactly hard to figure out is it", whereas other staff members would say "Ooh that's a good way but let me show you an easier one". So the stupid thought they'd got it right, just not done it the easiest way. I actually got into an argument with someone who claimed he was a lecturer in engineering.

He walked up and stood there looking at it like it was a Rubiks puzzle. He tried loads of ways to get his money out, apart from the very logical one of pushing the trolley into the other one. I mean there was a row of about 15 all hooked like examples but still he couldn't figure it out. I asked him if he wanted me to show him how to do it and his reply was "I'm a lecturer in engineering, I think I'm probably a little smarter than you".

Still, the dumb prick couldn't figure it out and eventually went "Well if you think you're so smart you try it", bada-bing bada-boom two seconds later the trolley is in and he's got his cash back. I make a remark about his lack of intelligence and he complained to the store manager. The manager (the stores not mine, I was self-employed) came out and told me that the guy had "done it right, just differently". So the guy went off without having to think about how stupid he was.

I had the same problem. When I was in my early twenties I applied for a job in the C+VG department of a big store. They gave me this idiotic test which they said I passed with flying colours. I asked them when I could start and they told me I had done "too well" on the test and wouldn't be hired. I mean WTF? I even went in to check out the guy they hired and I'm pretty sure my IQ fell by a few points just speaking to him.

Fischju mate you're a star, that was one of the best reads I've had in a long time.

Sorry for not replying to everyone yet, still got gut-rot. I'll answer some more later. Great answers from everyone though, some of my faith in humanities intelligence has been restored!
