This. I gave up Brave last year for Firefox after this news. Thank god Firefox didn't copy the others and become a "Chromium" browser.
Internet Explorer was Chrome's rival and now it's just another Chrome browser. That's kinda sad.

RIP, IE6.

Ah, I miss those simpler days of Windows XP with IE6.

Nah. That was a piece of insecure trash software.
Thinking of all the commercial legacy ActiveX based intranet applications working with IE6 and only IE6 that was a nightmare. Migrating away from this took ages.

Internet Explorer became a bit usable starting with version 8 and performed acceptable in version 11.
===========

For the initial topic: I hope uBlock will continue to work with Firefox forever. Not updating a chromium based browser anymore is not a good idea as a browser is THE application most likely to get attacked.

That's just too much work for most.

Either switch to Brave or Firefox.
Isn't Brave just Chromium? I would imagine Brave would also block uBlock.

It about 1 month and 1 week left before Google Chrome will start block uBlock Origin add on in June 2024.

Urgent to everyone must do backup current versions of Google Chrome , Brave now before end of May 2024.

C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application

C:\Program Files\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application

To block auto updates then you must rename folder "Update" to "No Update" will cause auto update to stop working.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Update

C:\Program Files (x86)\BraveSoftware\Update

Also don't forget backup your Google Chrome, Brave, etc profile files

Windows 10, 11 to 12 (same path since Windows Vista, 7, 8.x)

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data

Manifest v3
files maybe can damage or overwrite / replace to Manifest v2 files due to auto updates cause uBlock Origin add on to stop working or removed / deleted.

If you already backup old versions and profiles at same time then you are in good luck to protect them also can downgrade to old versions over new update versions. Never forget to block auto updates from services in background running would help more.

Wait and what happen in June 2024. Everyone should report any problems when it happened very soon.

Can I do all of this with Edge just in case if they follow the train?

The web browser is one thing you really shouldn't run an outdated versions of, so its not really good advice to help people stop their browser from updating. Look what is possible with webkit exploits on the Wii U for example.

The current best long term solution would be to use a non Chromium based browser such as Firefox, or run something on your network to block ads, such as Pi-hole if you wish to keep using a Chromium browser.

oh noz o wait i use firefox so who gives a fuck

I still can't for the life of me understand why you always think you're on to something that others didn't figure out long before you. It really doesn't take a whole lot of smarts to understand that this topic is obviously not for people who don't use Chrome. Yet here you are.... "But but but but I use Firefox so this not for me and I don't give a fuck!!!!"

I quit using Chrome back when there were rumors of it scanning your PC's executables and sending the list back to Google for supposed malware checks. I don't even think that ended up being true but I also hate the idea that Google has such a massive stranglehold on the internet due to mainstream adoption.

Back when I did IT work, even the little old ladies knew "internet explorer bad, chrome good", so I don't need to look at usage charts to understand that if chrome decided a site can't be rendered, people will simply never see it.

Honestly, while I'm not completely finished with Chrome (Modern Edge is a chromium based browser), I stopped using the official chrome site because it takes way too much CPU on my PCs. Edge might be the same thing, but at least it's a bit more bearable and it has a ton of features that aren't included in Firefox (if it did, then I would've moved to Firefox or Waterfox a while back)

If you want a non-brand-name browser you can also try what Ethelbert suggested

Use ungoogled-Chromium-based package from our guy Marmaduke.
https://chromium.woolyss.com/
If you wanted to at least a little more free of any large companies involvement in your web browser and just use the open source bits, you can try Ungoogled Chromium. I'll temporarily use this or Edge (If I'm on Windows) to use tools like VIA or WLED that require WebSerial for programming microcontrollers, but if I decided I needed to stop using Firefox or Safari for whatever reason, I'd use it full time.

I am good with that have, even if they are on the PUSH to add Copilot features onto their OS. I know that I use it to gather information, but I have a feeling that they're going to eventually use this information for something bad down on the road

I just remembered that I had another question regarding this! Even if I WERE to move to another engine that isn't Chromium based, how will I redirect my searches from Windows (since y'know, they hardlocked Edge in 11) to Waterfox, or my other search engine?
