Review Approach:

As a Smash veteran, playing since the age of four, I've taken great interest in Smash, as well as its knockoffs.
What happens when you give a children's media producer the ability to make a fighting game? That's exactly what Nickelodeon did with Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.
Seeing a company like Nick release a Smash knockoff is kind of hilarious. Cartoon Network's fighter for the Wii and 3DS was... okay in my opinion. I expected a laughable experience, yet I got quite the opposite.

Gameplay
The gameplay itself is really nice. Aside from a bug which may need up your control set on occasion, the game takes the cake. It feels exactly like Super Smash Bros. Melee, and even has wave-dashing! There is no side special, fair, or bair, however. It took a little to get used to, but it becomes easily unnoticed. Some characters are unbelievably unbalanced, as one of the TMNT's has already been banned from tournament play.

Characters
The characters that the game provides are really nice. All of the notable Nickelodeon characters show up, from Aang to SpongeBob to Powdered Toast Man, the cast is all loveable characters from your favorite Nickelodeon shows.

Soundtrack
The soundtrack is pretty good. The theme they designed for the game fits really well, and each of the stages has remixed compositions of theme songs and other scores from the shows itself. It provides the sense of nostalgia I wanted when I bought the game.

Bugs
I expect to change this entry in the future. As of 1.10, control sets may get messed up when playing 3 or 4 players if they all have different control styles. Some characters are way unbalanced, and are unpleasant to play against (unless it is a ditto battle).

All in all, All-Star Brawl is a good game. Though it has its issues, I believe that with enough time and effort from the studio, the game can be patched, added to, and balanced to provide a fun gameplay experience for everyone playing it.

Verdict

What I Liked ...
  • Fun gameplay, akin to Melee
  • Nostalgic
  • Easy to play
  • Fun for groups and and 1v1
What I Didn't Like ...
  • Buggy
  • Still in early release
8
Gameplay
Though buggy, the Melee style controls are wonderful to have again.
10
Presentation
They went above and beyond with the UI and modeling. Absolutely wonderful 2D to 3D transformation.
9
Lasting Appeal
I will not forget that I own this game. When the competition of Ultimate and Melee become too much, All-Star Brawl will be implanted firmly in my memory.

Overall

A really great game. I highly recommend it to everyone. Even though it has its errors, it has enough potential to become even better.

Maybe I'm old-fashioned, antiquated and unprogressive (once again). No, not maybe. It is a fact. When I read things like
  • Buggy

[...]the game can be patched[...]
I can't help myself and think: "Can't they do the tests before release?"

It is nice that we can have bugfixes nowadays after release, but I don't think that is an excuse to publish beta software. How expensive is that game? Is that a full price title? If I have to do the tests and file bugreports, they have to pay me.

Don't interpret my words as critque on yourself. I'm criticizing the modern way of game development, not you or your review.

you know what the problem is with all fighting games?

the computer opponents are so incredibly easy to beat even on the hardest difficulty, and yet THE SECOND you get online, you get paired with people that spend months on end grinding tech and shaving ESS notches on their controllers' sticks so they can quarter-cricle-half-dash-falling-nairspam-shinespike-jump-cancel-parry you consistently and they absolutely obliterate you.
