SoundPeats has built up quite a hot reputation for producing fierce earbuds that perform significantly at an affordable price. My previously highest-rated buds will have a lot to compete with if they're to remain at the top of my rankings, but will these rock my chart?

To look at, these are gorgeous! They have metallic rose gold/copper accents on the touch-sensitive controls that make them pop with colour and vibrance, and the case they sit in has an equally high-end aesthetic with a kind of matte black accentuated by a copper logo/ The case has a weight to it too, which must the mega-capacity battery, but sadly it has wireless charging built-in, which is a tad underwhelming given the £70 price point and the PRO naming.

The SoundPeats Capsule3 Pro ANC earbuds offer an astonishing 52 hours of playtime on just an hour's charge, which is incredibly useful in the fast-moving world we currently live in, and brilliantly accessible thanks to the USB-C socket provided. As such I have not needed to charge them for an entire two-week stint using them daily, on my commutes to and from work.

Phenomenal Battery Performance & Charge Times

With such staggering battery charge and discharge stats, it stands to reason that things dwindle a little when you include ANC into the mix, and in doing so you lose a couple of hours per charge going from 8 hours per charge down to 5.5 hours per charge from the charging case. The main reason for this is the continual power drain of utilising the three built-in microphones per ear to detect, flatten and, in real-time, cut out any background noise you encounter during calls or through media playback.

The 23dB cut is very noticeable, but the site claims that the Capsule3 Pro is capable of up to 43dB noise cancellation, though I honestly didn't notice it any more than any other 23dB cutting ANC headsets I own, so the jury is out on that claim.

Sound quality is good, solid, if a little low in volume, and I'm unsure if that is due to the drivers or the fit of the buds in your ear canal. Even using the correct sized tip for my ears I felt at times that they may pop out or become loose, though they fit perfectly the fear was real and the compulsion to continually push them into my ears to "fix the fit" and get better sound out of them was rather distracting.

Oddly, the main website lists a 12mm biological diaphragm driver with a 20 Hz to 40 kHz response but oddly the outer shrink wrap sticker describes a 10mm driver, while in some cached information online it stated there was a 13mm driver. Perhaps last-minute changes occurred, perhaps specifications changed, or perhaps there was a breakdown in translation, but either way, the unit I was kindly supplied to review has a very soft subtle sound to it that I felt needed cranking up a lot of the time to make it more appealing.

Whilst the trebles and mids are respectable, the bass response was not as potent as I had hoped, nor was the level of punchiness of the bio-coated driver, which meant I was reaching for the EQ within the companion app regularly. This wouldn't normally have been a problem had the companion app allowed me to sign in with less kerfuffle than it presented. For some reason my previous account would not log in, probably a password error on my behalf, so making a new account using my Apple ID seemed like the logical choice, however, it failed to complete setting me up an account, so I had to resort back to creating a new account with a throwaway email address just to attempt to bolster the default EQ into something more palatable for my listening expectations.

Easy to Use, Packed With Features

SoundPeats utilise on-ear controls that make the everyday next/previous/play/pause etc features an absolute breeze. Holding down the left bud for 1.5 seconds also toggles the ANC/Transparent and normal modes, giving you the freedom to tune into external conversations, or ignore everything around you with ease.

The SoundPeats Capsule3 Pro also features a 70ms lag-free gaming mode, which is great if you game with earbuds, but as I have said in the past I don't really believe in earbuds for gaming, over the ear is always superior in my opinion, but it's nice to have this as a feature for those who will enjoy it.

Another feature that is a little take-it-or-leave-it is that of the LDAC codec. As a primarily Apple iPhone user, I can't even utilise this codec for audio transmission, but the majority of *high-end* Android users should be able to seamlessly use it thanks to it being part of the Android Open Source Project. While the codec promises to bring better sound separation between instruments and a wider gamut of sound-scaping overall, the limiting factor always comes down to compression provided by the various services you use, or ripped audio you have squirrelled away on your internal memory.

Unless you're pumping in massive bitrate uncompressed audio at the maximum specified 990 kbps @ 24 bits/96 kHz, you won't really hear much difference to your usual audio clarity in all honesty, but again it's a nice advanced feature to have on a set of earbuds and one that you could potentially put to use if you're a true audiophile: and as such its technically a boast-worthy feature to have on these "PRO" monikered Capsule3's.

Good Sound But Not Quite Earth Shaking

While these are not bad by any stretch, I'm just not overly ecstatic about them. If they had a wireless charging case, better power indication, and better bass response, then they would still suffer from the low-volume woes in comparison to other buds I still use daily.

For £69.99 I expected a little more in the sound department, and though call quality is undoubtedly great and the battery life is stellar at 52 hours, the ANC is not notably better than any other buds, I did a lot of swapping buds to verify this, and having to turn the volume up higher to appreciate them the same way I already do with other makes kind of negates a lot of the batter gain in the first place by requiring more juice to function adequately.

Not quite on my recommendation list yet, but the Capsule3 Pro are a solid backup if I were to lose my daily drivers in a tragic accident.

Verdict

What We Liked ...
  • 52-hour battery life with the case with <1-hour charging time!
  • 8 hours per charge or 5.5 hours with ANC on
  • 43dB ANC (23dB avg)
  • IPX4 waterproofing
What We Didn't Like ...
  • Companion software is problematic
  • No real battery indicator
  • Too little bass response for my tastes
  • No wireless charging
  • LDAC is not supported on iPhone
7.7

Overall

They're good, but they are not the most pleasing for sound quality in my honest opinion. I can't quite feel the level of depth and warmth I expected, and as a result, I cannot rate them any higher on that front. The balance of battery life, features, and sound quality is slightly awry for me, so these will not be shaking my current daily drivers from their position just yet.
