3DS homebrew tool FBI title manager removed from GitHub

EGlXVVq.png

After a rough week, the emulation and homebrew scene continues to suffer major losses. As of today, homebrew developer Steveice10's GitHub repository has been deleted. A known quantity in the 3DS homebrew scene, Steveice10 created important tools for the system such as a modified sysupdater, a port of GBC emulator GameYob to the 3DS, and most importantly, FBI title manager, which allows users to install .CIA format 3DS titles and homebrew.

FBI has not been updated since 2020, and was considered feature-complete, with its source code available and the project archived, but it was suddenly removed from GitHub today, along with all of his other projects. The exact reasoning behind the removal isn't known, though the timing implies it may be related to other events happening in the emulation and homebrew scene recently.

How can I decrypt .app files on my Nintendo 3DS without owning a 3DS? (I have the movable.sed) I don't have the cia on my SD card either.

Pussies be folding left and right...

What's next, Dolphin devs going dark?
mGBA? VBA-M? Desmume?

Stop caving to the pressures just because 2 emus got taken down, for fuck's sake...
This, so much this. Also, I'm sure some are just using the current situation to add some fuel to the bonfire by joining in on the dumpster-fire to cease development of their already long outdated/has-not-been-updated-recently software.

Unless these devs have been pulling the same kind of shady stuff the yuzu devs have, what reason do they have to be scared?
I don't think anything shady was going on with Tropic Haze and none of these devs do either. That suit has shaken the equilibrium that the enthusiast scene and Nintendo were living in. Now, there is no telling who, or what, is next.

I'm not gonna say they shouldn't be legitimely afraid, probably they should if they are in the US. But if everyone is gonna be afraid then Nintendo already won, regardless of not establishing any legal precedence.
I even have a backup of FBI on Internet Archive. https://archive.org/details/FBI.cia

Are you Steveice10 then? I meant that the public perception will be that emulation / homebrew is indeed bad or illegal, not a matter of availability per se. That's a stepback on a lot of stuff, including the fight for the right of ownership. The right to repair fight has gained ground because the majority of public perception is that is good and necessary and no matter what lobbyists say or do there is enough public pressure to create protective laws.

Regarding Internet Archive, I urge you to add the source code as well.

No, I'm not Steveice10. Also, I don't have the source code of FBI because it wasn't necessary for the installation of cias.

I'd say to just download the tools you need/use and archive them. I just got a New 2DS (used!) and ran the hacking steps.

I'll just keep the apps I need on a personal cloud and just refer to them if needed. It's always safe.
I'm looking into hacking my 3DS at some point in the near future. What tools would you recommend I make my own backups of?

Feel free to grab the assets and the source and make your own repo. Instead of being part of the problem, be part of the solution. Take the mantle yourself if you're so inclined.

Some of you guys and gals are jumping hard and far into conclusions here. The homebrew software FBI was willingly taken down by the creator themselves, they did this because of their involvement with Citra development. Considering the circumstances, FBI as homebrew software isn't thrown in the illegal bin, it can be forked and or rehosted, stop freaking out like it's the end of days. In fact I'll probably supply a copy later today, so see, absolutely no reason to lose your shit. Developers make decisions willingly when things like this happen, it is what it is.

  • MysticStarlight @ MysticStarlight:
Do you have a surge protector or an UPS?
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Yea but to play the next gen games, you must have those games on internal, or buy the official ssd expansion cards, which are expensive
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@MysticStarlight, dunno what each one of those are
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@MysticStarlight, my PS3 was already modded when my dad bought it for me and my brother
  • MysticStarlight @ MysticStarlight:
A surge protector is a device that protects your electronics from fluctuations. I recommend having your console plugged into one of those
  • MysticStarlight @ MysticStarlight:
An UPS is even better because it has an internal battery that keeps your system on even if the power goes out, but it's much more expensive obviously
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
@MysticStarlight, oh i recall seeing one in some in the houses of some relatives, including my dad's apartment

On the series s/x you can use a external HD but any next gen games must be on your internal ssd, or you can buy a ssd expansion card, but pricey. Any xbone, 360, or og Xbox games can be played from external tho.
