Back before USB loaders were worked out, there was a lot of talk of the Wii units put in hospitals and such.
AKA Starlight Nintendo Fun Center.

Did anyone ever work out exactly how the HD was implemented on those units?
If so, did any of that aid the development of the USB loaders?

I don't think so, I think it was more inspiration for them than anything else. Those units aren't exactly easily available to access...

Nintendo could have done it a number of ways, with a modified IOS and the hard disk on the USB bus (like USB/SD loaders), something on the drive interface (like Flatmii or Sundisk), something on the SD interface (like USB/SD loaders), some sort of replacement for the onboard flash...they've got total access to and knowledge of the hardware and they can sign any software they like, so they could do it just about any way they wanted.

I don't think anyone knows how they actually did it, although I'm curious about it so I'd love to be proven wrong and have someone post some nice juicy details

Usually someone ends up leaking stuff out at some point, or I figured someone would at least have gained access to one by now, so I thought I would see if there was any update.

Ya, I know we have our own methods now, so it is kind of a moot point, but was just curious.

Looks like there were 3 versions produced.
The latest ones, which include Mario Kart, can be updated with new games via a USB connection to a PC running "Nintendo Download Manager" which downloads new games via the internet.

If it is version C you can check version info by holding both + and - at the same time for 2 seconds while on the game select screen.

The requirement of a USB type A-B cable for the update suggests that external hardware is plugged into the kiosk or the Wii hardware used is very different as the Wii itself does not have a B type USB port.

The 23 game limit suggests that it likely has a 120Gb hard drive, assuming it uses 1:1 single layer DVD images.
That is enough for 23 games plus the menu graphics, etc.

By my investigations to try to find some kind of hidden content on the site, the one time password is brute forcible as the number of attempts to enter it is stored client side, Nintendo-security-carelessness style.

I'm not saying do it.

Would probably be easy enough to get a OTP over the phone anyway using some social engineering if you had the details of an existing Fun Center location (hospital, address, serial, etc).

Apparently you would also need to fake your IP since it checks your IP range.

Being able to use the Nintendo Download Manager isn't really that interesting though, since it is not a 'pick n download'. It is more like:
1: Send off an email
2: Recieve order confirmation
3: Wait a few days for verification
4: Log in and pass authentication
5: Download only the titles from your order

So somewhere on the internet there is a server on which Nintendo hosts all the games listed on the page above...

I wonder if they are on the same server that NUSD gets it's files from?
What is the address NUSD uses anyway?

Is it piracy if it was released for free? Not in my opinion, but I also think it's not piracy if buying it isn't owning it, and it's not piracy if you can't buy it from the original creators anymore.
