Hacking Convert .dat to .sav

Is there a way to convert .dat files to .sav files?
I have an M3 Perfect which uses .dat files for its saves, and I just bought an M3 Real, which uses regular .sav files.
I want to transfer my games, and saves fully intact, to my M3 Real.
I'm thinking I just rename them.. but I remember reading some guide saying that you have to hex edit the .dat to convert it to .sav.. Is this true?

I actually just tested out renaming a .dat to .sav, and it worked. Would there be any issues, do you think?

It was on a wiki page that said that .dat files would have to be hex edited for some reason..

U would have to def use a hex editor to convert the file into something the pc can read and then just change to .sav
