Hacking EZ Flash JR gameboy color not saving

it doesnt save any games.
how do i fix this its a ez flash junior

after every time you save in a game, press the back button to reset, then press A to save (so it saves on the sd card), then turn off the console.

Should normally not be necessary. I can't use the reset button on mine (it won't boot when I do), and my games save fine. If the battery is dead sure. The battery is socketed, so would be easy to replace.
