Is it a good idea to leave the 3DS on and charging all night with the wi-fi on? Won't this have adverse effects on the battery? Isn't this required for spotpass to work though?

I used to leave my DS lite on all night all day, back when i used to play Animal Crossing lol.
I left my gate open so my friends could visit my city.
Should be just fine

I've been leaving my DSL on overnight and charging for over a year because of the alarm clock and nothing has happened yet.

I don't think anything will happen to a more advanced gadget.

Actually, with Lithium-Ion batteries you get the most battery life out of them if you charge them up frequently. Basically, think of it as a reverse memory effect. Also, if a Lithium-Ion battery drains completely (not just to the point where your DS/DSi/3DS/phone doesn't turn on, but completely out of power), it can NEVER be recharged as there is a safety circuit in there that trips when the battery is fully discharged. If you did manage to recharge a fully drained lithium ion battery it would likely EXPLODE which is why that safety circuit is there.

You are correct, but not only will you damage your battery if it gets drained, but also if your battery gets "too" charged.

I doubt all this can happen, the 3DS will monitor voltage levels and turn on/off charging when necessary. Like stated above, lithium-ion batteries last the longest if you charge them in interval, and not fully, and not from drained to full. Therefore I think the 3DS stand is great... whenever you're finished just put it in the stand.

Leaving things plugged in and charging when they're fully charged can produce "trickle", but it shouldn't be too bad.
It depends on if the plug stops sending charge, or the 3DS says no more and cuts it off.
I imagine since they included a cradle, it'll be fine.

Actually, in most cases it is the battery and not the device (such as the 3DS) that monitors the voltage level and stops the charging. That is why you see reports of some of those cheap, poorly made, replacement batteries exploding or catching fire. In some cases the reason those cheap replacement batteries are so cheap is because they leave out one or more of the multiple safety systems that are normally built into the batteries.
