If I remember correctly you NEED a regular SD (NOT SDHC) SD Cards that are 2GB and under are regular SD.
Get an SD (non-SDHC) card (that is your only choice). USB does not work with bootmii. If you want the best option then bootmii dump to an SD card is it, otherwise you are out of luck.
FS Toolbox is a NAND browser that can dump files from the nand to sd card and write files from sd card to the nand

But on-topic: what's the point in being able to dump your wii on your USB drive if the only way to restore it is by using bootmii (meaning: SD card needed)?
Sorry mate, but there are no valid alternatives. You say it yourself: bootmii is the best. And for a backup program, "the best" entails reliability. Even if there was another program out there...would you trust it to actually restore your wii to a solid state if you can't rest assured that it actually works?
I've heard not-so-good stories of bootmii as IOS as well...but I don't think anyone will discuss that it is the best in what it does.

So, I would say there is a good point in being able to dump NAND backups straight on USB drives.

I could note that modmii can build a complete nand from scratch, but being able to mess with your own dump is a much cleaner solution*. Otherwise, you'll have to use savegame manager gx to extract your savegames and miis, programs like wii mod to pack the installed channels as wad and take a note of your system's settings...and then use all that data to almost manually get it all on that precreated emulated nand.

I don't think there is a USB dumper. Simple FS Dumper says it can but I've never gotten it to work. Maybe it's a cIOS problem. I know BootMii works fine with my SDHC card, if that helps.
Judging by some other things with cIOS, try simple FS dumper but with cIOS rev17 installed. I know WAD creator doesn't work with cIOS newer than that. USB may work that way.
I have an sdhc, I might try it with that. Wiibricker assumes correctly that I am trying a UNEEK install. I just realized that either way, I need an sd so I can place the files for bootmii. Why can't bootmii have usb support!?
