OP
We're only four days away from a supposed January 27th unveiling, but apparently there are still more juicy PSP2 rumors left to dole out -- Japan's often-reliable Nikkei newspaper reports that the handheld machine will sport a crisp OLED touchscreen and 3G data from NTT DoCoMo when it arrives later this year, with the latter enabling multiplayer action and even full video and game downloads over the Japanese cellular network. What's more, the paper confirms that the screen will be physically larger and powered by some potent new silicon. So, how will Sony differentiate this PSP2 from the PlayStation Phone? The game system won't make calls. [/p]

That's quite awesome. An OLED touchscreen would bring the total price of the PSP2 up by a lot, though.

I don't see this going over too well in the west.

AT&T contracts for a gaming systems, AT&T users can't play games with Verizon users, etc.

More news about a system that doesn't exist. Meh.

Even that. If they add 3G connection that will implicate the transformation of the console in a computer and the disappearance of his essence. Some call this natural evolution of technology, but the fact of turning a console on a computer (even handheld) adds a number of barriers that were not previously.

I'm admittedly somewhat concerned. PS3-capabilities, a touchscreen and 3G Data all in one device makes for a horrifically short battery life. If it isn't download-only, as well, the battery life will be even shorter.

Online multiplayer without being tied to a wifi connection sounds great!.... but i can only imagine how much that would raise the price. They could go a kindle route and just one large fee at original purchase or contract route. Either one doesnt sound too good.

All this tech sounds impressive for the PSP 2 but nothing really making me think sonys not making the same mistake twice.

Wait. 3G? If that means signing a contract just to play a PSP2, and then paying monthly, I'm already not buying it.

However, OLED touchscreen sounds interesting.

3G is faster than your average Wi-Fi connection now, so it would actually be better for accessing the PSN Store and multiplayer.

You can never avoid the high latency (ping) when gaming through cellular networks.. Then imagine playing 3-4 or even higher number of players through cellular, sure, it wouldn't be a problem with turn based games, but anything else.. no...

If Sony won't even make phones for CDMA carriers, why would they make a gaming system for it?

The 3G will likely be AT&T (and maybe T-Mobile) exclusive.
