Hacking What's the point of being able to downgrade if I upgrade to another firmware that's hackable too?

I'm on 4.1.0 right now and plan on upgrading to a higher firmware version, because installing some software via tinfoil isn’t working. So I can use ChoiDujourNX to upgrade and then disable autoRCM, it'll burn the fuses and I can't downgrade. I don't really want to use autoRCM, since I don't use my hacked switch that often and that keeps it on.

If I go from 4.1.0 to 5.1.0, since 5.1.0 is hackable, what's the point of being able to downgrade? Can't I do everything I can with 5.1.0 (and anything, even including 6.2.0 now) that I can with 4.1.0? Thanks!

Do you mind me asking what you are installing that does not working on 4.1.0? I am also on 4.1.0, I am considering installing 6.1.0 but not sure whether to stay on 4.1.0

From what I've gathered, there is an exploit on older firmwares that's possibly more permanent than what we have now. If you want to utilize that exploit at a later date, updating without burning fuses is recommended.

Updating allows you to play newer Switch games.

Turn the unit off using hekate payload. If your not using it all the time, its takes an extra minute or two before you tuck it away. Or keep it docked?

you'll lose access to a currently undisclosed warmboot exploit that may be easier and more reliable than the current coldboot exploit. if you're comfortable and feel secure with your current hacking environment, that's really the only loss, since yes, you can still do everything you can currently do as long as you don't update to 6.2.

if you're going to update, you'll burn fuses if you don't use autoRCM, which means returning to the original firmware won't work without the same autoRCM. it's possible to fully power down the switch with autoRCM installed, you just have to send a Hekate payload to the switch and use its power off function, or hold down the power button for 12 seconds while the switch is in RCM. you can just leave the console in sleep mode and docked or something too.

Yes, it seems like there's no way around updating to play newer games. I followed this guide (https://gbatemp.net/threads/play-ns...e-reinx-hactool-tinfoil-extracted-nsp.512921/) to no avial, I still get an error when installing via tinfoil. So it seems like I need to upgrade.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

The possibility of a possible warmboot exploit makes downgrading worth it for me. I guess try to do that. I do that some questions:

1. What version should I update to if I want to play the games coming soon? I guess there's no exact answer, since no one knows what version newer games will need. Will 5.1.0 be fine, since recent games have that firmware version as the lower limit?

2. Does v5.1.0 have exFAT support?

3. Does this guide (https://gbatemp.net/threads/guide-fuseless-firmware-update.520429/) seem okay to use? It seems like not many people care about being able to downgrade, since the thread doesn't seem that active.

5.1.0 should be fine, just use tinfoil's option to bypass firmware check. Just about every game, including smash, can be played by using that option. And yes, 5.1.0 does have EXFAT suport

When I used the bypass firmware check option, I still got an error when installing. Others who did as well said that updating the firmware worked for them...

On which game did you get the error? Because i'm on 5.1, i've been using that option for several games and all of them have worked so far

Maybe it's because I'm on 4.1.0. There wasn't an error code, but the error was:

OpenFileSystemWithId:101: File @Sdcard://tinfooil/nsp/XXXX.nsp/xxx.cnmt.nca is unreadable! You may have a bad dump, fs_mitm may need to be removed, or your firmware version may be too low to decrypt it.. Error codDone!

Aye that could be the issue. If you do update, update to 5.1, that might fix everything

Exfat support is extra firmware update

So even if I'm on 5.1.0, I won't have exFAT support?

exFAT is an optional module because nintendo have to pay a license fee to microsoft for every switch that has it.

When you insert an exFAT card and you don't have it installed, then the switch will tell you that you need an update. It will tell Nintendo you need exFAT and it will do a software update to get the module and whenever you do an official software update in the future it will install the exFAT module.

If you use choidujournx then you can select whether you want to install the exfat version or not, you must select it every time or it will get removed. If you only ever install exfat with choidujournx then nintendo don't know you have the exfat update, if you subsequently do an official online update then Nintendo will also remove it.

Ah, this makes sense. Thanks!
